Tech 21 Steve Harris Fly Rig

Don't sell anything yet..
Run the pedal through the effects return (if the head has one) and use the head as a power amp and see what you think. This setup will bypass the heads preamp and give you an idea of what the pedal can do. Who knows, you may prefer using it as an effect pedal...
Only you are going to know whether or not you'll need a comp with this or not.
Once you receive it spend some time with it to figure it out before off-loading a bunch of gear thinking this is the end all-be all.
Thank you. That was my plan, it has an effects loop and I had planned on testing it. I just figured if this thing blows me away, then I wouldn't need an amp with the Trace sound and equalizer, it would just be a waste. Maybe someone has been looking for one and could make better use of it than me. I may be back after a while to check in and ask this question again!

I don't want to sound dumb, but if I can achieve any sound I want through this box, I would like to possibly sell my Trace amp and go with just a power amp. Any suggestions? Should I also get rid of my compressor or is it needed with this. Any help would be greatly appreciated as there are some here who already have this pedal. I've only ever used heads and combo amps, no experience with preamps and power amps.
I agree with previous reply. Don’t sell anything yet and try those suggestions.

From my experience I tend to not feel the need for compressors with most Sansamps as with a moderate amount of drive There’s some compression going on but your mileage may vary.

Your head may be all you need in a power amp but if your want a separate one QSC and Crest make some of the best

My dUg is going nowhere! It's definitely in my top three dirt pedals because it can deliver that modern clang -- haven't been able to get that from the SH-1, but I didn't really expect to because it's not a multi-band OD.

As I said before, the SH-1 is more versatile for a number of reasons: two mid bands, flatter response, two usable channels, easy to dial in traditional clean and overdrive tones as well as colored/metallic ones. The dUg has some versatility for sure (doesn't have to clang), but I always struggled with clean tones from it -- not a problem, I use it dirty or bypassed. It can be a struggle to get mid-punch from it... but the mid-dipped dUgTone is the whole reason I love it (works beautifully in my power trios, as it leaves room for guitar), so that's not a problem either.

Bottom line: more testing to come, but I'm confident that I'll keep the apple as well as the mango.

IN FACT at some point it would be great to gauge straight-up comparisons from those who have YYZ, DP-3X, and SH-1

If I may...
The YYZ is basically like sending a full frequency signal along with a super clean DI on a second channel. All tone controls affect the drive side only. And the mids when pushed also add some upper register harmonic dist.

The dUg has hpf/lpf so there is more of an intense difference between both signals creating quite a scoop. The mids are also set rather low... around 325 and 700. Also more of a true "biamp" setup

The SH1 is akin to a vintage tube amp which can be super clean or overdriven to the max. Nice touch with the separate mid control with one being before the drive channel. Also the second gain stage channel is pretty sweet, especially if you need dirty, clean or have two basses with different output levels.

Yes. This made me realize I was going about getting clank from the YYZ ALL WRONG.

I had way too much bass boosted on the eq, which I suspected might also be overdrive-only side(I knew the 2k mids already were, and I’ve stated what a fantastic eq point for attack it is)

So I backed off the bass and set it to 12:00. Backed off the overdrive side a bit on the mix and got a good balance with the clean low end.
Fed that into my Oxford, and boosted the bass a little on the Ox. A lot more chime in the highend and a much tighter sound.

For the folks who think the Ox’s bass is centered too high?(120hz) Look in the manual of the low eq of the VT Bass DI. It’s 125hz. Now I don’t know if either or are a bell filter or the other kind though(I forget the name of the other one. It’s not a bell though!)

I still got my eye on that SH1 too. I mean heck. Baby Blue(SH-1) and sea foam/surf green(YYZ) are two of my favorite colors! And the overdriven sound of the SH-1 seems the closest Tech21 has even gotten to my beloved Oxford.

But I also like the YYZ a little more now.

Somebody tell me why I need to run the SH1 into a GED-2112 so I can justify buying one...

I'm sure there are more reasons, but here are the first two that popped into my head:
  • Choose from multiple preset tones: the SH-1 has two, and I believe the 2112 does as well
  • Have lots more knobs from which you can construct a more perfect bass tone
Totally up to you whether the benefits are justified by the expense... :ninja:

Got the GED-2112 pre-amp not long after it came out but really lusting over the SH1 (Geddy and Steve Harris are my 2 favorite bass players - now Tech21 came out with a "Jimmy Bain" model...that GK tone he had was killer...). Somebody tell me why I need to run the SH1 into a GED-2112 so I can justify buying one...:D

1 pedal = Happiness
2 pedals = Double happiness

Has the sound characteristics and the theory behind this pre-OD mid control been discussed in detail previously in this thread?

Not that I've seen. But if you're familiar with the VT Bass, for which there are quite a few YouTube demos, the character control is essentially a high mid control before the clipping section. As is the mid control on the YYZ.

Increasing the high mids before the distortion makes it clankier. You can then try and flatten the EQ back by reducing the mids afterwards, or boosting the bass, or backing off the blend (or all of those!).

Oh, OK. I've had VT Bass since launch so I'm familiar with how it operates--and while I knew the Character control was essentially a variation on Mid, I was not aware that it works the way it does because it's pre-Drive.
Thanks for the clarification/specification.

Might try this... I like to boost the bass on the YYZ but also use/prefer the tight button IN.

I believe the other one is a shelf/shelving filter. :)

Interesting about the VT Bass DI, I had no idea! WRT the Oxford, I mainly have to remind myself that the controls are interactive... sometimes Mid will fatten out the sound, and more importantly, the Character control affects lows in a big way: it can tighten or phatten.

It has been awhile since I looked at new pedals etc. I didn't even know this thing was coming out. After reading this thread, and watching the Tim Starace Youtube demo of it, I ordered one this morning. If I can make mine sound 1/2 as good as Tim does then good lord. All the tones are over the top but Highway Star and Lamb Lies Down on Broadway are unreal. LLDOB is just filthy good. Can't wait to try it.
