Tech 21 Steve Harris Fly Rig

I believe the other one is a shelf/shelving filter. :)

Interesting about the VT Bass DI, I had no idea! WRT the Oxford, I mainly have to remind myself that the controls are interactive... sometimes Mid will fatten out the sound, and more importantly, the Character control affects lows in a big way: it can tighten or phatten.

Yes! Shelving. That was what my brain temporarily deleted from my memory. I was surprised about the VT as well, bc I’ve heard folks on here complain of the Oxfords 120hz lows.

I can say I’ve never had a problem with it, and folks have even commented on how thick it sounded direct.
Also keep in mind some of my old clips had a multiband compressor on the master track only compressing the hell out of the lows which I didn’t know about(doh).

as for the Oxfords mids, I rarely bring them past 12:00 as it sounds too muddy for me. The YYZ’s 2k mids, that’s a different story!

*I saw the SH-1 is 50hz, which should be excellent for even severely defined instruments*

Happiness is here! Won't be able to try it tonight, but soon enough!

What is it that you like better about SH-1 over the YYZ?
They are completely different animals -- so in a way my initial statement of these going head-to-head was perhaps misleading. It was more like seeing which pedal I could not justify keeping after spending on the new SH1.
Getting the YYZ I was looking for a single-pedal clean/drive blend -- which this does in its own way.
But I have a different sound in my head, and have been using a 4-pedal signal chain to achieve it. The YYZ wasn't able to match my sound -- and make my life a whole lot easier :)!
The YYZ is a great pedal none the less, and look to the TB classifieds soon if you're wanting to pick one up.

Further: the SH-1 is GREAT! It's nice to have so much EQ available in what on its surface may appear to be an OD pedal ... this is really a straight-up amp emulator and it does so wonderfully and in a small package. (It could really use a designated headphone function but I can deal with that).
It's more straightforward than the DP-3X ... and for me these two are SO good and SO different that both are keepers.

We're kindred spirits regarding YYZ, SH-1, and DP-3X. All three are excellent, but I found two of them to be more useful so I let the third go. It's a great time to be a bassist!

Indeed - Tech 21 is awesome and is always upping their game.

Funny, too how the two keepers vary on the utility end of things:
  • SH-1 = No headphone function, defeatable speaker simulation for all outputs.
  • DP-3X = Headphone function, speaker sim only on the XLR out. (My best guess here is that developers/dUg felt that the 1/4 out would feed an amp front end, hence didn't apply speaker sim; XLR out would feed a PA or DAW, so would benefit from always-on speaker sim.)

spot on with dUg

I was curious how you’d compare their drive tones ? Are they similar or voiced pretty differently ?

There is so much variable within the EQ that in my assessment the 'drive tones' of each are not directly comparable because of the many options available... in other words, the Drive takes on many forms and tones depending on how you turn the many knobs.
They both go from Jamerson to Rutherford ... with the SH-1 perhaps going a step further when engaging the 'Bite' toggle. And while the Bite seems to add high end, the YYZ 'Tight' toggle seems to apply a HPF to the drive side - so one is an addition, the other a subtraction.

I really want me some Tech 21 stuff! :) But I feel like I should wait for a Geddy Fly Rig or at least the Gefilter Fly Rig! @Gefilter1001 ? ;)
Do you think they would do one more Ged pedal? Seems like it would be a winner if @tech21nyc could stuff the Ged2112 into a Fly Rig? Well and get Geddy to sign off of course! :)

That would rock!

No more gigs until Turkey Day Eve, but last night one of my bands hosted an open-mic at a cool venue, big stage with nice acoustics. For the one hour set I used SH-1 alone for dirt (because I'm still putting it thru its paces), but during setup I experimented with EQ, dirt, and compression from the Darkglass amp. In short: the SH-1 worked beautifully all by itself, but also stacks nicely into the Darkglass dirt. :bassist:

That’s my complaint about the FlyRig. I want emulation on the XLR and not the 1/4” output. I’d also like the ability to send the SansAmp to the board and parallel out to an amp, like the BDDI.
