Tech 21 VT Bass

I'll say this for the digital community...every year, modeling seems to improve. I'm still not buying it for tube sounds, but it is getting better. I used to think it would be impossible for SS and digital to mimic tube amps completely, but now I think it is and it's not far off, like maybe in 5 years. So I'm probably not going to get a VT. But if they ever come out with a pedal for $150 that sounds just like a Reddi, then I'll reconsider.

2008 American Standard P-bass V --> Tech21 VT Bass --> Tapco Blend6 mixer --> Pair of KRK Rokit 8's = :D

What a nice preamp/DI? I love it!

To those who commented about "Ice Picks", that only occurs with character + drive + treble in the 3 o'clock+ position. That can be tamed quite a bit by adjusting the tone controls and/or pickup selection on the bass.

I played the VT Bass for several days using two different basses (Actve Jazz and Pass P-bass V) as a DI and as a preamp through a crappy combo amp. It is great as a DI and helped quite a bit with the Ibanez SW65. I think it would be even better through a better bass amp. I'm very pleased with this peddle. IMO it's worth every penny! ;)

I can't get this pedal over here in the UK yet, and I'm can't find any US stores that will ship one over here (I tried all the webstores in the dealer list on the Tech21 site).

Does anybody know a store that can do this? Or maybe someone reading this thread works in such a place and get send me one?

Yeah, I saw they have them, but the price difference on this pedal is huge between UK and US. $150 in most US stores and £150 over here (£125 at Thomman). I've had a few PMs about US sellers willing to send them over, but I'll have to wait until they come in stock and I can afford it!

I am really waiting to try the VT.

I normally get my sound via the bass and the amplifier and don't use any effects except a occcasional chorus or octaver when required. I bought the Tech 21 Programmable Bass Driver DI ("PBDDI") recently while on the road because I was blown away how good it made a passive Jazz bass sound into a monitor amp. Couldn't wait the extra month for the cheaper VT.

The up side is that you can get some very convincing tube sounds out the PBDDI.

The downside is that if you use active electronics, you have to disable or adjust the signal stength to that of a passive pick-up. Otherwise, the effect sounds very cheesy. I am guessing this probably explains while the results from readers who have tried the PBDDI have varied all over the map.

I now run my active bass outputs to an old Boss DE Delay rack with adjustable output and the delay effect bypassed. This allows me to dial in the correct signal strength to the box, then twiddle with the level and drive settings. It is an iterative process. With some fiddling, I can get some very convincing tube emulation sounds that are exactly what I want. All I really want is a SVT, a B-15 ("flip top") and rarely, something heavier and brassier that sounds like Flea on Blood Sex Sugar Magik. I find it helpful to start with the bass tone and boost controls at neutral.

Did it arrive? How is it?:D

It has arrived and it makes everything sound better. I'm no expert as this is my first pedal but it comes with a card with 4 suggested settings to get you started (SVT-Style, Fat Tube, Flip Top Style, and Rage) and they all sound different but great.

When I have the drive up anywhere past 1/4 it gets all dirty and I can't stop my amp from clipping, I guess this is normal.. I have a lot to learn!

hi guys! i play pop-rock. i love tube emulation.
i've tried behringer bdi21, Dha vt, and now i use a zoom b2.1u(it wins among these pedals thanks to the great Eq.).

this VT bass by tech 21 seems faboulus, but how does it sound for semi-clean sounds? i play pop and pop rock. i love tube emulation but i cannot turn into strong overdrives.
the vt bass is still good to me?
i 'd love it for mid control!

..sorry,i meant to say : a FULL tube amp emulation...

i'm not very interested in "single see-the-light" tube stuff!
(DHA is very good product, but a behringer bdi21 plus comp do the emulation job better by far IME)(but dha has other qualities)

nobody tells me anything about clean sounds in the tech 21 vt bass?
