Technical question about Cabinets

Hi guys, i have a Noob question. last night i stumbled upon the Aguilar webpage and was researching for a new cabinet and i looked at the Aguilar SL112 Cab. [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

I was wondering what does "Power Handling: 250 watts RMS, 500 watts peak" mean exactly?

I do own a 500 watt used Tube Preamp head, can the cabinet handle 250 watts or 500 watts?

250, which is the max before it'll burn out. And even then, most cabs will fart out long before that point, so it's a bit academic. If you hear it farting out, you simply turn down a bit.

Sensitivity: 99.9 dB 1W 1M
Max SPL: 120db

If you do the calculation, it reaches max SPL at 100W - 20dB more than 1W. After that, it's a heater.

It is also a bit academic because your amp won't be putting out its max wattage very often, especially if you don't use compression of any kind (including distortion). It basically isn't a very useful specification in practice, there is loads more to it than that. Somewhat suspect that it boasts higher sensitivity than the GS2x12, didn't really count those as power hungry cabs.

Your amp isn't putting out all it's power unless it's turn all the way up. The speaker will distort before it gets close to 250 watts as well. Bottom line is, listen to it, it'll tell when it's time to back off. Don't expect a 112 to give bonecrushing volume, that's a good way to blow it. Consider 112 for practice/coffehouse/restaraunt gigs, a pair of them for anything more than that. There are 12's that can handle more than that but they're mostly custom DIY builds.

Amps can put out their full power long before the knobs are turned all the way up. It is pretty much going to be hitting its full power sometimes when you can hear clipping.

+1. The knob settings merely set the amount of input signal needed to produce full power output. Even with a low gain setting, a strong enough input signal can put out lots of power.

That said, audible clipping in the preamp is not an indication of the power section hitting clipping.
