Teen drinking

Teen drinking parties (other people's kids) at your place?

  • No. I won't risk going to jail and losing my house.

  • Sure. They're gonna do it anyway so it might as well be here.

I'm thinking the liability is pretty huge. Other people's kids. Drinking on his property with his consent. Then driving home. Some will probably stay over. But some won't. I told him he's crazy. He says I should chill.

I say he's really dumb and irresponsible, I say no teen drinking but understand at that age some people have a drink with their kid in their late teens. That is different it's their kid and they are monitored and responsible for them an usually not letting them get drunk. This guy on the other hand is allowing a whole party and kids will be getting drunk....He is an idiot if that blows up in his face he is screwed and will hopefully learn.

It's sounds like he's trying to be cool dad.

This seems like something that is very contingent upon culture. From what I understand, drinking at that age in a lot of European countries isn't a big deal. In America, it is. I agree that the legal libability is troubling and I personally wouldn't be placing myself in that father's shoes, even if it were done in the name of keeping a responsible eye on the kids.

With that said, when I was that age, there were times I had some drinks with my some of my friends' "less strict" parents.

Look up the stats. There have been studies done showing that the kids of "cool dad" are more likely to become alcoholics and/or get in to drugs. I had two friends with "cool dad". One got in to drugs so bad he literally hopped a plane to a far away city so he could jump off a bridge. The other is in jail for the 3rd or 4th time.

I have two daughters. They are young right now. But when they become teens, if I ever find out they attended a party where a parent allowed one of my daughters to drink I will personally go over there and punch them in the neck. When they do that, they take my parental rights away from me.

While we're at it, the same goes for an abortion, a tattoo, drugs or an thing else. If I find out any adult allows something like that to happen to one of my kids without my consent violence will follow.

I'm not concerned for the kid who lives there - it's her home and if her parents want to let her drink, it's up to them and their own judgment in how they handle it.

But for any other minor in attendance? Very bad and illegal idea. Huge liability for the parent; huge chances of other parents getting upset; this is a no-win situation and the father is showing very bad judgment by letting other minors drink.

Regardless of whether or not you think the law is appropriate, it's the law. The statutes here are particularly prickly and were put in place after an especially horrible post-party teen crash/multiple deaths incident several years ago. Property owners are now required to actively prevent underage drinking on their watch. If the party gets busted and the owners are found to have been looking the other way, they can do time.

I say not good because of the liability. Its bad news for everyone. Onthe other hand I think our laws are antiquated on this. I think we should be more liberal with it as in Europe. I truly believe it leads to less problem drinking later on if its experienced at a younger age. Generally speaking kids want to do what they are not allowed to and they will get stupid with it. I sure did!

Hypothetical situation: You learn that an 18 year old girl is throwing a party at her dad's place. She'll have 20-30 of her 17 and 18 year old friends over. BYOB- there will be drinking. Legal age is 21. Dad will be there and dad is cool with it. I say dad is nuts. Am I wrong?

Dad is nuts and breaking the law for ever other minor that is not his own he allows to drink. All the problems this world pushes in our kids' faces, early alcoholism isn't one that needs to be added to the pile. I've known parents who either try to BE cool or try to make their kids more popular by doing this and it erks me as well. He's also putting himself at risk of a lawsuit from the parents. If something happens to one of the kids while they attend this party, be it they were drinking or the accident happened because someone else was, it will all come back to him. Kids tend to overact and over-indulge their first times drinking.

Every once in a while around here you read in the paper where an adult(s) goes to jail for having kids over and allowing them to drink.

They always go down for contributing to the delinquency of a minor and the cops always grab a couple of the kids and hit them with a minor in possession of alcohol charge.
