Thought I should start my own thread.
I was inspired by Dark Horse's "Dyn-o-mite" build, and commissioned a similar one from Scott at Grove guitars (Link Removed). It will be a mahogany-bodied 51' P, chambered with an F hole, Warmoth tele neck, Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder p/u and Schaller hardware.

Option A: f-hole through red cross?:

Option A is similar to DH's layout but the downside is the f- hole goes through the red cross, eliminating a cool aspect of the graphics.

Option B has the red cross more center/treble, brings the graphics down "onto" the body.

He's got to keep the dovetails out of the f-hole. Before you suggest slanted graphics, Scott told me there is a higher risk of separation after some years as the body and top expand and contract in 2 directions.

Personally I prefer the second option. It's different than DH's (I want to pay homage, not copy exactly), gives room
to highlight the f-hole and the graphics are not so hidden under the hand/arm when in playing position.

Like Scott said: "It's a puzzle".

I think I prefer option B as well. The cross is very cool, and would be a shame to lose. Plus it sounds like the wood will match up well with the necessary cuts/routs if done that way.

Really, I can't see this ending up in any way looking bad!

B, definitely. It makes the wood more of a focal point, whereas A makes the wood seem more like an addition made later.. And you wouldn't wanna lose the red cross!
