Tell me about Pensacola, Florida please....

Not that much heavy industry there. Lots of farm land. Did that list the sources of pollution?
how does the next chapter of this story go?
having been a native the vast majority of my life and having done some relatively extensive travelling up and down the east coast and now out west, it was interesting to read about some perceptions and misperceptions of the area I call home. I find it especially ironic that some of the most racist people I know in the area are relocated northerners. most of the "heavy polluter" figuresthere are
several huge polluters in the area that account for the high numbers, but it is absolutely nothing compared to the miles and miles of industry belching putrid filth continuously in some other areas I've visited that make you wanna take a shower just because you drove through.

As for salary, get a load of this:
$83K Olympia = $75K Pensacola
you can earn almost $10K/year less in Pensacola than Olympia to be even economically ... pretty cool, eh?

Yeah, that's the wife talking. She won't live anywhere where she has to share space in her house with large bugs on a regular basis. That's just how she is.
Thanks Rod for that bit of info. Maybe it's late, maybe I'm dense....but are you saying a $75K per year salary in Pensacola will buy me the same lifestyle a $83K salary in Olympia will?
The move to Pensacola is not out of the question still. I really backed down on the offer after they refused to let us come down for a weekend on their dime so we could see how it was. I stay in contact with the guy who offered me the job, and he still reminds me the offer is there when I'm ready.
Some of this recent cold and dreary Pacific Northwest weather has had me itching to get out of here though.

I live just west of P'cola in Daphne, just outside of Mobile. Grew up in this area. I have nothing against P'cola, but it is a very dirty town. Nothing is kept up, and it just seems to look worse all the time. Most of the people with money keep moving further east of the city. The downtown area, while very small, has a bit of a nice character. The beaches themselves are nice.
If the move would be good for you financially and as a career decision, I wouldn't let the hurricane thing alone keep me away. While we do have to put up with it every so often, it really isn't that big of a deal. You will have to pay some high insurance premiums, though, and your hurricane deductible is considerable.
I've been in IT for about 10 years in this area. I've worked as a consultant with many companies in P'cola. If you want, PM me and I'll tell you what I know about where you are going.

I lived in Tallahassee for a few years and visited Pensacola a few times. IMHO only...it freakin' sucks. I hate the entire panhandle though. No offense to any panhandlers but my experience there was terrible. I found the entire panhandle region to be the most unfriendly and rude area that I've ver been. And I've lived in a lot of different places. The people for the most part were horrible. Now granted, I'm speaking mostly about Tallahassee. But the times I've visited Pensacola, it proved to be very similar, only not as much of a night life.
As for the humidity, yeah it's a killer. And the bugs...the palmetto bugs are the size of puppies! But down south they get even larger. But the people get much cooler so it's a fair trade.
Again...all this is IMHO and IME.
EDIT: I just saw that you are in Lacey. I lived in Puyallup for a few years and loved that area. IMHO, if you like Lacey/Olympia/Thurston County area...you might not like Pensacola. I can't say enough that this is strictly my opinion. But I loved WA and thought the people were exceptionally friendly. I still maintain very close friendships with people in Puyallup, Seattle, and Tacoma. If you hate the WA weather and that is the big sell, you might like it. But the thing I look for when moving is the quality of people. As I said, the majority of the people I met in the panhandle are terribly rude. Down south, they're awesome. In Daphne/Mobile, most people are awesome. But hit gulf shores, pensacola, etc. and you start meeting total a**holes. Again...IMHO.

Excellent! This is the perspective I was hoping for, and figured I wouldn't get. Your thoughts are valuable, and I appreciate you taking the time to share them with me.
The weather is one of the factors behind our desire to move, but the kind of people I will live around and work with is equally huge.

I can't say that's been my experience. I live in Daphne, and some people in Mobile say we're a bunch of stuck-up snobs since we live on the nice side of the bay. Yet I talk to people who move here from Mobile and P'cola all the time, and they say we're more friendly.
As for P'cola, the place is friendly enough I think. It all depends on who you mingle with. The thing is, if you work in P'cola, you have the option of living in several places depending on how you feel about driving. I know many people who live right here in Daphne, Spanish Fort, or Fairhope who commute to P'cola every day. I also work with some guys who live in P'cola but commute to Daphne for work. Each group of people has their reasons for what they do.
I still say the biggest thing against Pcola is how dirty the place is. But then again, I live in Daphne, so my perspective on cleanliness is highly skewed. But even Mobile is MUCH cleaner and nicer than Pcola is.
All IMO.
I live in Pensacola and work in Mobile all the time... in 30 years I have never heard anyone say Mobile is cleaner than Pensacola... Im not quite sure what part of Pensacola your talking about... the music scene isnt the greatest... but is that the towns fault or the musicians that are out playing? Daphne and Fairhope are very nice... but Daphne is just a big mall in a suburb town... and Fairhope is aging.
ha... it was immaculate in the early days... people would dress up to go there... Bob Snow was the guy I think. Ive only played there since the Mitchells bought it... but my Dad played for 10 years out back in the old days. My earliest memories are of sitting on those iron chairs watching him play, drinking shirley temples and eating those spicy hotdogs!
I just remember parts of the complex... I was too young to know what was happening outside of it.

Weeds growing in the medians and next to the roads. Litter everywhere. Of course a few places are cleaned up, but most of the city looks to be ignored. Parts of Mobile are like that as well of course. But you can drive for miles around Mobile and not see that kind of neglect. I've never found that to be true in Pensacola. But hey, you guys have McGuires, so it's all good!

This is exactly how I've seen it. I head to P'cola whenever I can to check the shops and all, but I always find myself ready to head back to Mobile. Pensacola doesn't have nearly the downtrodden feeling I get from a lot of the coastal Mississippi towns, though, even before the storms.
I guess home is where the heart is... cause I would never live in Mobile or Daphne... and you guys love it... downtown Mobile scares me. That park with all the squirrels and homeless people... anyways... I highly doubt the original poster will be in our neck of the woods anytime soon.
