Tell me about Pensacola, Florida please....

I guess home is where the heart is... cause I would never live in Mobile or Daphne... and you guys love it... downtown Mobile scares me. That park with all the squirrels and homeless people... anyways... I highly doubt the original poster will be in our neck of the woods anytime soon.

I was going to say the same thing in my last post. There are areas of Mobile, that while they are perfectly fine neighborhoods, I would NOT want to live in. Nothing wrong w/ the areas, I just don't see myself living there. The same holds true across the Bay. I've lived in most parts of Mobile, but greatly prefer west Mobile.

Hey, I've had a lot of cool gigs in that park! Never once had a problem with a squirrel! Homeless people, now that's another story. Even worse, street preachers....ugh. I'm a Christian myself, and those guys drive me crazy!

I work about 3 blocks from Beinville Square, and I've gotta say for the past 3 years or so, we've been, for the most part, rid of that horrid street preacher that was down there. I'm not sure about weekends, though. Spend all week down there, I don't want to go on the weekends. I work across the street from the shelter most of those homeless use, too. Our parking lot is across the intersection, diagonal from our office, so walking out at lunch time is always... um... interesting. When it gets dark early in the winter, we have to hire police officers to hang out outside our office to walk to female employees to their cars.

Yeah, there was that one guy that screamed at people around the fountain around lunch time every day for several years. Gotta admire his commitment, but that's about it. I don't think that's the way to go about things. On Friday and Saturday nights, I've noticed that there is often a little make-shift band setup right at the corner of Bienville facing the old Subway. They turn it up and sing these God-awful Christian songs (an oxymoron I suppose) until it makes you want to turn right back around and go back into the bar to drink some more. I haven't had the heart to tell them their methods are counter-productive.

Nah, I wouldn't let us scare you. I've lived in several different places around the country. This area, including P'cola, is as normal and fine as any other. To me the things that make or break a place are more about getting settled in, meeting some friends who you like to be around, and feeling like you've become part of the area. I think you could do that here. Personally, I would do anything to get out of area you are in just because of the weather. I much prefer the Gulf Coast with it's long summers and lazy beach attitude.

I lived off of Lewis Turner Blvd. in Ft. Walton Beach in the early 80's while going to Okaloosa-Walton Jr. College. I was 30 minutes east of Pensacola. Back then it wasn't too bad, but it always seemed a little dirty compared to Ft. Walton. There was a guitar shop I used to go to, can't remember the name but they had a decent selection.

I remember when there wasn't much in Sandestin/Destin, it was almost clear all the way to Panama City. Hey, is that little amusement park still there in PC? How about Mancini's music in FW?

I played at the El Villa, The Ramada, Victors and a couple other clubs. I even worked as a bouncer at Sammy's Playhouse on the island. Very interesting time in my life.

Ok, I am drifting off, if you do not mind he drive, Ft. Walton was a great place, but I haven't been there in so long it could have changed.

I think my biggest beef with the panhandle region was that people just seemed to be very touchy if you tried to interact with them. Of course there are exceptions but the majority of people I met while living in Tallahassee would almost go out fo thier way to be rude. I mean I'm a pretty friendly and outgoing guy and I jsut found that when in a public place, it seemed that most people had really negative attitudes. I've lived on the west coast, the pacific northwest, the southeast (north of Florida), the east coast, overseas...etc. and I've never experienced hostility like I did in the Florida panhandle.

Yeah, people ar different. I wouldn't live in Pcola or Mobile anymore. I grew up in Mobile and moved to West Mobile when my wife and I married. She wasn't from Mobile. She worked in outside sales in Baldwin county, and she wanted to move over here. I was very resistant to do so. But she persisted, so before we bought our first home, we decided to rent an apartment over here in Daphne for a year to see how we liked it. That's all it took to convince me. I've never looked back. I spend a lot of days driving around Mobile with my job, and I just get antsy to get back across the bay where things are slower. But I've also been over here for 6 years now, and we've developed a whole new set of friends that live on this side of the water, so it makes life much more enjoyable. I think that's the key to happiness regardless of where you live. Friends.

Yeah, see that's the problem. Everything east of pcola has grown up. It used to be much easier to shoot down hiway 98 toward Ft. Walton or Destin, but not anymore. If you do it late at night, it's a piece of cake. But rush hour it can take forever, so it makes a short commute take quite a bit of time.

Tallahassee is a different world... the rest of the panhandle isnt like that...

It's roughly 3 hours away. Gator fans are plenty in Pcola, as are FSU fans. That shouldn't be an issue.

And there's a nice little hole-in-the-wall BBQ place owned by a former Bama player just outside P'cola city limits. It's all decked out in Crimson and has lots of relics on the wall. Should make you feel right at home over the coming years when we start owning the Gators again.

Yeah, well, I went to school at FSU and was a die hard Nole fan at the time. Of course that was in the Chris Wencke, Warrick Dunn, Peter Warrick, etc. days. The team was great! But it was mainly because I went to school there that I was so into it. As for the team stuff; yeah there are mixed fans in Tally but obviously the majority is Nole fans. But the only cool thing I found about living in Tallahassee is it's most notable resident: George Clinton.

I live in Pensacola.

I saw the boardwalk mentioned as a nice place, but not really anymore.

theres a lot of crime. and drunks. nothing like it used to be.

and I also saw something mentioned about mom and pop stores.

what Pensacola did you visit?

theres virtually nothing besides guitar center and blue angel music.

ad the various pawn shops all have little to nothing musical, much less bass guitar gear. (with a few exceptions)

but that isn't my point for bringing this up again,

I wanted to see if any talk bassists lived in Pensacola, out of curiosity
