Hi TBers Has anyone used a six string bass tuned up a fourth E A D G C F? If so what brand and model was it and how did you find the resultant sound? I am trying to decide on a six string bass that I can remove the low B and restring it to include a high f. My goal is to play bass lines and chords simultaneously as well as chord melody stuff sort of mix of Victor Wooten, Charlie Hunter. I currently do so on a tenor 5, but a higher string would broaden my chord voicing options as well as add more clarity to the sound.
I think I speak for everyone when I say, what? Edit: In trying to understand what you're talking about I came across this thread: http://www.talkbass.com/threads/tenor-bass-clever-idea-or-oxymoron.135633/ I conclude that if the tuning is E A D G C F and the low E is still an octave lower than the low E on a guitar, then yeah it's a bass.
Why not? It has the same low range (like every 4 str bass tuned in standard E A D G) to play mostly songs that they are out there.
That is a good suggestion and I did consider the fender bass vi, Ibanez src6 and the Danelectro one as well. I was concerned that the string spacing might be too close for slapping. Definitely an option though.
Any number of people on TB tune their fivers that way, minus the top string of course. And the very first five string ever to be offered for sale (as far as I know) was tuned EADGC. So, there is plenty of precedent for the tuning and it should server your purposes very well. It is really easy to get strings for this and any other tuning in the US, I hope you find it as easy where you live.
