You write beautifully and concisely, and I agree with everything you say 100%

I am all for anything which reduces ledger lines or 8va markings. Tenor isn't hard to learn. I learned my Bach Gamba Sonatas from a viola edition, and I experiment with different transpositions of the Cello Suites. Also, I have worked with a lot of singers where transposition from standard keys was necessary, and have a fretless Fender tuned a step low but with an added high Bb 5th string. I have trained myself to read interval-wise (?) rather than absolute pitch. I don't really care what the clef is.

I have tried to learn Bottesini parts which had more ledger lines than staff lines. Found it almost impossible.

If you practice enough, clefs shouldn't be a problem, however annoying they seem. The only thing I can't read well (or at all) are those old Italian editions that are written at pitch. Too many ledger lines in the wrong direction.
