Test Driving 2004 JB 2

You are very fortunate to be in the position that you are in. Even if I were not a dyed-in-the-wool JB2 believer, I'd still be recommending the G&L. Nothing wrong with SR's, but the American-made and simplicity factors are enough alone to convince me, even at the expense of the upper frets. I love my US JB2, and can't wait to get an ASAT next year.

As a relatively new bass player I don't think missing two upper frets will matter much. I am really starting to lean toward the JB 2, probably because I play it every night and really enjoy it. Every night I play it I feel that it has a nice smooth tone and will probably be really accustomed to that tone. I do feel that I owe it to myself to check out the SR 750. When I played the SR 700 in the store I noticed a couple of inconsistancies with notes on the G string and there were a couple of frets that would buzz no matter how I held my fingers. The JB 2 has not revealed any such issues yet.

For those who are interested. Today I went in and looked at the Ibanez SR 750. It is a nice guitar. Got to love the JB-2 sound and the Ibanez was not capable of producing that sound. Although the Ibanez is a well built guitar the fit and finish doesn't even come close to comparing to a G & L. The sound of the Ibanez was a bit more harsh. I never took the Ibanez home for testing. My mind was quickly made up and the G & L JB-2 is now my main guitar. Waiting for my number in the G & L club.

The choice was a passive G&L over an active Ibanez, and that speaks for itself. Funny how that works out. My Warwick limited edition is usually case-bound, thanks to my G&L, but a recording date later in the week will see some German growl coming forth.

If I want to boost the bass with a preamp I figured I could just add an equalizer pedal so I opted for the quality of a G & L. My G & L is one that is definetly overappreciated. Don't quite understand an underappreciated G & L. Possibly some people don't understand what is good for them.

Great choice. Although I don't have a JB-2, I do have two L2000's (different necks) and a Legacy (LB100) Bass. I have been to the G&L factory and was given a rare tour. Amazing attention to detail.

I like the JB-2 although it does not seem near as popular as the L 2000. In the future I will test out a few more G & L's and add to the collection. The SB-2 is one that I have been considering but, I never played a L 2000 and feel that I am missing out on something.

How hard was it to get a tour of the factory? That is something I would like to do if I get to California. Wait, you just gave me a great idea. Vacation to California visit the wine country, get my wife in a good mood, then tour the G & L factory.

Great idea Flabass! We go to California visit Disney and the vinyards, both which are at my back door in Clermont. We actually have Lake Ridge Winery right here in Clermont.

The SB-2 is one that I have been considering but, I never played a L 2000 and feel that I am missing out on something.

I think the draw of the L2K/ASAT basses is the versitility and range of sounds. There are some sounds that are unique to them, but it's the range of solid but different sounds that is really amazing about them. Wouldn't trade mine.
