Tetsuo Sakurai

Please don't tell me i'm the only one who's heard of him and is totally awed by his awesomeness?

And if i am BEHOLD:

and don't be discouraged by the intro they're just screwing around for 15secs or so.

He's the one with the Aqua TRB6 (not sure on the exact model). The other one (YES TWO BASSISTS!!) is Yoshishiro Naruse still awesome but i just dig Tetsuo.

OH YEAH!!!!. I've known about Tetsuo for a long time and have a number of Casiopea's LP's. He is a monster on the bass!!! Another great fusion bassist from the far east is Mitsuru Sutoh of T-Square!!!

A Groove is a Terrible Thing to Waste!

Groovey stuff!

But I can't stand either of their lead tones... Way too thin and trebley. Let's get some real meat like Sheehan's lead tone :smug:

I really love the bass in Japanese music, generally! They always seem to care a lot more about it than in a lot of western music...
Honestly, the Japanese took to bass playing (all pop and jazz instruments pretty much) after hearing cats like Larry Graham, Louis Johnson, Stanley Clarke and the like. And while there is a 'sterile' aspect to their playing, they are extremely dedicated and mostly virtuosos! Not much they can't do, technically. They do have quite a lot of fun when they're playing.

That was one thing I liked about the vid! I love to see musicians having fun while playing, and both those guys had a huge grin plastered all over their face while playing! Great to see :)

While we're on the subject of Japanese bass, here's another guy I really like (and another awesome jam band, haha): Keiji Kawamori

They're not really a live band, so his tone is a bit weird (but still awesome), and the live sound on that DVD is awful anyway (I had to put my download of it* through dozens of preprocessors to make it sound decent :P). Really recomend checking out their albums, and his playing and tone on Black Mages II is nothing short of awesome!

*The two live DVDs they have are a fanclub release only and are impossible to buy. I'd kill a man for a chance to buy them :P

:hmm: Not my cup of tea and he was playing with  a pick!! :eyebrow:

j/k I guess he's ok. Pretty much buried in the mix behind the wall of guitars (and organ) typical of metal/prog rock.

I cba to figure out a song with some of the insanely cool fill and stuff he throws in, but that's my favourite song by them, so oh well ;P

Yes, he does play with a pick, and on the album he has basically my favourite pick tone ever. Warm, insane low end, tons of growel and loads of pick attack/clack. All of the instruments sounded trashy on that DVD unfortunately :/

Everybody should check it out anyway. It's Uematsu powered. Ueumatsu is a god!
