Texting before every Band Rehearsal...Should I???

Oh, ok.

Nobody in my life does that. We all treat it like email. Like I said, the whole point is convenience. Not having to stop what you are doing to answer a phone.

Having said all that, I guess I am in the texting only crowd unless it's pretty damn important. BUT, that's the ONLY modern thing I do.

I'm a lover of language. I speak a few.

One of my biggest objections to texting is the murder of language due to "txt spk". It's not just English. I've experienced it in at least two other languages.

Not Cool bro. I'd let it go this time. But I'm in the same camp as Dincrest. I drive 45min to rehearsal. I start texting 30 min. before I have to leave. Just to make sure everyone is still going to be there on time. Even doing that, someone is always 30 minutes late and is holding up the show for some stupid, easily avoidable reason.

We usually practice once a week at a studio we all chip in and rent out. It's a regular thing every Wednesday and I never really thought about having any issues with that. Well, last night, apparently the guitar play and the drummer were driving together and got into a minor fender-bender. No one was hurt, thank goodness, but it was going to take some time to do a police report and paper work etc. The singer had called one of them for an unrelated topic and learned about the situation and they all decided to scrub practice. No one bother to call me, so I showed up at the studio and waited around alone for 40 minutes before I started calling and texting and finding out the news.

We're all adults and all should know how to communicate. It bugs me that they did this.

So should I start sending a text every week to see if "Are we still practicing tonight?"

Texting ahead of time wouldn't allow for car crashes on the way there. I'd be pigged off if they hadn't told me. This thread is the flip-side to another, where OP is talking about not liking his drummer texting to confirm every rehearsal.

In my humble opinion, the "grown up" thing to do here, would be to adress this incident on the next rehersal. I would then suggest a group chat or group text, where everybody has a mutual responcibility to give notice if they can't make it to practice, as soon as they know. That way, you have full transparency, and it's easier for the rest of the band to decide weather to go on with the rehersal, or to drop it.

So I was in a group a few years back where we had problems with certain people (drummer mostly) calling out of rehearsal. It got bad enough that they would wait until the last minute to do it, in the hope that someone else would do it first so it wouldn't be their "fault." I would send a group confirmation text earlier in the day to force people to commit or not in a timely manner. (PS, we eventually fired the drummer)

I'm glad it's not me. I'm not one of these "kids" who was raised on cell phones.

One of my "rules" is: "If you have time to text, you have time to call."

Dumb rule. Why not text? All they had to say was "we had a car accident, won't be able to make it to practice. we'll have to cancel today". How would a phone call be any different or better? They clearly had other things to deal with at the time. Plus you can send the text to everyone in the group and everyone can reply.

I think a better course if action would be to text during practice to see if everyone is awake.

At our age? More like a bullhorn….
