Haters gonna hate. Bruno Mars and his band could set up and play in some of these guys' backyards, and they'd still swear it was all prerecorded/lip-synched.
Yeah. I guess I'm not much of a "pop" music guy.
It's OK for the moment, but I prefer music that will stand the test of time.
That's alright, I'm an old geezer, but I bet I'll still be alive after Mr. Mars has faded from the scene.
No really, they do that at these events, it's okay. They don't suck, and at one point they played that version spot-on. But for the sake of choreography and "things going without a hitch" it's pre-recorded. It's been like that since like, the beginning of time. It called show business. And it's okay.

Agreed, +alot. There's nothing wrong with wanting to perform a good show for millions of people, and if pre-recording means a good show that isn't a trainwreck, by all means, what's the problem? Ok, so its not a performance if they're not really playing/singing? I promise you, Bruno/his band and RHCP were performing their butts off for that 5 minutes, even if it was to pre-recorded material.

Though critics have pointed out the song's similarities to some of the hits by the Police, Mars told MTV News that he did not set out to write anything inspired by the Sting-fronted band. Instead, it came to him out of the blue, one night during his studio sessions prior to recording the Unorthodox Jukebox album. "I don't think it initially tried to sound like anybody else, but I picked up the guitar and just started playing [the song's opening chords]," Mars explained. "That's how it normally works; I'll pick up a guitar and I'll start humming a melody, and I started singing that, and I was up there in Sting-ville, in that register, so that's what you get..."He performed the song live with Sting himself during the 2013 Grammys.[
They actually take it up several notches when they play live. IMO it's refreshing to see artists with their own bands playing at the level they do AND entertaining at the same time. It's far from easy... not that I expect everyone, particularly musicians, to respect that.

I honestly wonder what some people "see". No offense.
Mars seems to be working out fine on main stages around the world.
Generally speaking, I know this is the standard internet MO and maybe I am finally getting old (
) ... I just don't get the rampant negativity. It wasn't a concert, it was a relatively short performance under the tightest conditions most of us probably couldn't even have imagined. And working in an update on an older style is something lots of successful musicians do. If that's a problem I'd love to know of an artist or group who didn't or doesn't have it?
And the inability to recognize talent outside their own sweet spot is kind sad. People like that ate usually shocked to find that artist they like like other other artists they don't AND even consider them influences.
So here's this young guy with a young band making their mark in the MUSIC BUSINESS and people are talking about who they don't compare to. Never mind the fact that the artists talk freely about their influences and make no claims or comparisons. I think Bruno Mars is a major talent and I saw nothing to suggest otherwise last night. Talent in an old school sense so it doesn't surprise me that he's chosen that vibe.
In a way I guess it's a lot like the game. For a moment you can forget you're yourself and talk as if there's more skin in the game than reality suggests.
Right, like Tainted Love, The Way We Were, Alone Again Naturally, Billy Don't Be A Hero, Mrs Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, I Will Survive, Achy Breaky Heart, Elvira, etc etc etc
We (Metalband) were watching the Super Bowl here in Germany and really enjoyed the show. It was fun to watch.
And we all hated Beyonce last year, but that's a different story.

I see what you're saying. I wonder if some of these performances are kind of hybrids, though - with some "just in case" pre-recorded stuff, and live singing and playing on top. It just didn't seem to me like it was all lip-synching and miming.
Having said that, there actually are some younger acts, including Bruno Mars, who really can throw down live.
I'd take that bet.
A friend told me that same thing a little while ago. He didn't think he had the talent or staying power of Huey Lewis & the News.
Here's what I've noticed about him: he's not "just" a singer. In addition to having a damn good voice that's easily recognizable, he's done his homework. He writes catchy songs, seen in not only his own work but also for other artists. He plays musical instrument quite well. He pulls off live entertainment well. His recent stint on SNL showed that he's comfortable on stage, away from music. He's studied the business and knows what to do to be successful and so far it has worked out well for him.
So I don't see why someone like that wouldn't last in this business. The others I've seen with these same attributes certainly have.

To his credit, the man is a capable and successful pop songwriter, and is obviously a fine showman. But, he did start as a child Elvis impersonator, around 3 or 4 years old, fwiw. He should be a good performer by now.
Just saying that I didn't see much displayed by him that made me say, "Wow, this guy is really good." Mainly I saw a capable performer, mostly performing in the style of others. I didn't see anything that, to me, said "Bruno Mars is a performer for the ages."
Again, an obviously skilled performer, backed by obviously skilled performers, but nothing fresh or new. Not bad, just not... I dunno, just not a lot of "there" there.
All, of course, imo and all that.
Some of his songs may stand the test of time, but most pop stars who write tend to do better writing for others. There's more longevity.
And, yes, some classic rockers are tools. Just like some pop stars. The songs are really the key imo.
