Bruno Mars makes me think a lot about Lenny Kravitz.
Same obsession about old tones, same way to take past recipes and turn them into hits.
Once he reached the 80s through his trip in the past, he had nothing left to copy and vanished.
I think Bruno Mars is the same.

I'm not about to go out and buy any Bruno Mars records or get seriously into him, but I thought the show was way above average, even considering the prerecorded tracks.

For me, U2 playing completely live after 9/11 is still the gold standard for halftime shows, and I'm not really into them that much. I thought they killed.

On a related note, I don't get Flea. I've only heard RHCP songs accidentally over the years and I've never heard anything in any of those songs that suggests he's this monster bassist. Competent for sure, but no more than that IMHO.

But hey, I do what I always do... if I don't dig it, I flip the channel.

If I happened to be a at Bruno Mars concert, I'd give him my full attention. He seems like the real deal.

The only thing I liked better than the Bruno Mars/RHCP part was watching Peyton Manning and the Broncos choke starting with the first snap of the game. But I'm a diehard Chiefs fan, so I know a little something about teams choking.

Bruno did NOT get paid for the "Man Soap Opera" gig.. past performers haven't gotten $$ either! mmm
He writes great pops songs that are current in style. He sings in tune, dances like James Brown ( kids dont know who JB was so they think its all new And that's COOL) , high energy hang 10 off the edge performance... girls swoon over him.. .and he writes songs.. hes not just a producer project. Both he and past super bowl performers don't get paid. Because NFL says "Look at all the exposure they will get from this"

Well,they shouldn't pay the TEAMS that play the game because "Just Look at all the exposure they will get from this" and you can sell allot of t shirts and sell tickets next year. typical corporate line of bull...

Hey, don't pay the NFL ACCOUNTANTS , because "Just Look at all the exposure they will get from this", and you can tell your clients you work for the NFL.. etc etc..

Hey, don't pay the Catering because "Just Look at all the exposure they will get from this"...

HEY don't pay Security company because "Just Look at all the exposure they will get from this"

I read an Article yesterday that the NFL is somehow TAX EXEMPT and pays ZERO taxes since the 1960s..
I tell ya, if that is so, they have some good lawyers and accountants, and ill bet you none of them work for free just because "Just Look at all the exposure they will get from this" Bull

The whole thing kinda reminded me of the 80's - you know, where the NFC Championship game was always the REAL Superbowl.

Woulda been nice to see both teams play their best, but it didn't happen. Seattle played very solidly, and Denver had one of the worst games of their season.

Bad timing.

I did like the little reminder they did (I think it was late in the 3rd quarter) of the worst drubbing any team ever took in the Superbowl: when the Niners won 55 - 10. They didn't say anything, but the obvious unspoken statement was that Denver was competing with themselves for worst Superbowl loss in history.

As far as I know, only one man managed to have pivotal roles in each: congratulations John Elway.

Now, of course, I know that is not the case with Mr. Hernandez, who is very talented. I love the fact that he both writes and performs music, and as I mentioned before, that he uses real instrumentation. I wish him success, and I hope he ushers in a new pop era focused on the music, rescuing us from the performance-focused morass dominated by Lady Gaga et. al.

It's really not much of a leap to actually look into an unfamiliar artist after seeing a production like that to find out if they can actually bring it. I did a while back and found that Mars isn't as one-dimensional as some might think (not saying you) nor does he have an issue with performing live at the same level as what folks saw last night on a regular basis.

yo yo ma and itzak perlmans duet at Obamas inaugnuration was pre recorded and they faked the playing bit, this is done to avoid technical difficulties during a television broadcast. I for one plan on going to see Bruno Mars live if he comes to town to see for myself if he's really that good, I suspect that I wont be disapointed.

To all the haters, Bruno is laughing all the way to the bank. Tickets went on sale this morning for an August show, gone in an hour. At $150.00 a pop that is serious money. And yeah, I missed out.

I dig Bruno and his band[Jamereo Artis], I thought they were perfect for the halftime show. I'm also a long time Chilli Peppers fan but I thought they weren't really needed.
As far as playing live for the Half time, I seem to remember Prince being one of the only acts that played mostly live, and he played in the rain.

When I said I was not impressed, I was not saying they sucked, or they have no talent.

The circumstances of the performance were certainly, (I hope), not the norm for the artists. It's not their fault. I am sure they are talented, and I understand they did what they had to do in that situation.

I have been attending performances of live music for nearly fifty years, and have seen some of the greatest acts ever (Count Basie, Woody Herman, John McLaughlin, Frank Zappa, Hendrix, The Doors, Howlin' Wolf, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, BB King, Elvis, Dr. John, Miles Davis, The London Symphony Orchestra, Joe Pass, James Brown, Led Zepplin, Deep Purple, Bob Dylan, Johnny Winter, Cream... I could go on, and on.

The Superbowl halftime gig is more carnival than it is art.

Sorry if I offended anyone by expressing my opinion, but I am sure you will all get over it, as I'm sure Mr. Mars will.

Is it possible that we're confusing the definition of the word performance? On the one hand, as musicians, I feel we tend to think of performance more in a technical sense. I.E. playing it right. I think we should view Bruno's performance in the same way we would any other ENTERTAINER, not nesisarily [sic] the way we would view an actual musical performance at a concert. As has been stated, it was the [DEL]Super[/DEL],,,ahem… "Big Game":ninja:
