Though critics have pointed out the song's similarities to some of the hits by the Police, Mars told MTV News that he did not set out to write anything inspired by the Sting-fronted band. Instead, it came to him out of the blue, one night during his studio sessions prior to recording the Unorthodox Jukebox album. "I don't think it initially tried to sound like anybody else, but I picked up the guitar and just started playing [the song's opening chords]," Mars explained. "That's how it normally works; I'll pick up a guitar and I'll start humming a melody, and I started singing that, and I was up there in Sting-ville, in that register, so that's what you get..."He performed the song live with Sting himself during the 2013 Grammys.[

We have the disc. I expected to see Sting on bass but it's Jamareo Artis. Bruno and Sting performed it together a few months ago, but I can't remember which TV show.

Bruno was awesome, the game stunk. By the way, Bruno has been hitting the charts since 2006 so that I would say that he's not a mere one-hit wonder. With a multi-instrument talent, a very rare asset and not to mention he's kicks a$$ on the kit

Never heard of them.

Watched a little bit of the lip-synched, playing to a pre-recorded performance, and was not impressed.

I heard an audio clip of the show on the radio...the singing was definitely live.

The James Brown dancing...Bruno does that as a part of his live show, for that one particular song. It's entertaining to me, but he can't quite pull it off. In fact...I have yet to see ANYONE who could pull off that particular dance move entirely

I am not a big fan of modern pop music, so I was mainly watching the halftime show looking forward to the RHCP playing. Bruno really surprised me to he point that I was disappointed when the chili peppers came out playing "Give it Away." I was expecting something more like "Higher Ground," or what would have really been cool is if they came out playing a James Brown song since Bruno already had the vibe going.

Bruno doing the halftime show was a very good move on his part because millions of people who may not normally take the time to listen to him, got to see how talented he is.

Bruno did NOT get paid for the "Man Soap Opera" gig.. past performers haven't gotten $$ either! mmm
He writes great pops songs that are current in style. He sings in tune, dances like James Brown ( kids dont know who JB was so they think its all new And that's COOL) , high energy hang 10 off the edge performance... girls swoon over him.. .and he writes songs.. hes not just a producer project. Both he and past super bowl performers don't get paid. Because NFL says "Look at all the exposure they will get from this"

I read an Article yesterday that the NFL is somehow TAX EXEMPT and pays ZERO taxes since the 1960s..
I tell ya, if that is so, they have some good lawyers and accountants, and ill bet you none of them work for free just because "Just Look at all the exposure they will get from this" Bull

I agree about the musicians should get paid part.
The NFL is technically a non-profit and tax exempt, but there's more to the story than that. I heard a piece on the radio about it recently, and it admittedly didn't cover every detail, but essentially most of the money is distributed to the individual teams, which are not tax exempt. A senator is trying to introduce legislation to strip the NFL of it's tax exempt status, however even if successful, apparently the NFL as the overarching entity could easily show a loss so it wouldn't pay any tax anyway. I'm sure there's some shadiness going on, but it's not true that a $9 billion entity is tax free.

Bruno Mars is fantastic. Don't let the haircut and shiny jackets fool you.

At this stage in his career, he is still a little derivative of his influences. But who isn't. And he may be doing that on purpose, like Lenny Kravitz did.

He's been writing songs for other artists for several years, before he broke as a solo guy. He wrote "Forget You" for Cee-Lo, among many others.

I saw his concert last year. It was excellent, if maybe just a little overproduced for my taste. I'd love to see him and a four-piece band in a club that holds about 150 people.

Bruno Mars makes me think a lot about Lenny Kravitz.
Same obsession about old tones, same way to take past recipes and turn them into hits.
Once he reached the 80s through his trip in the past, he had nothing left to copy and vanished.
I think Bruno Mars is the same.

Heck, Kravitz sold a few million albums in that period. Not sure he's vanished (he's acting), and any of us would love to have the success he's had. Bruno is a little more mainstream; he may be able to hang on longer. Chicks dig him.
