Thank you Canada.

I don't think anyone in PETA is getting rich off this, so "cashing in" would be an inaccurate description. They are using an isolated media moment to try and attract more attention to their cause. Is it in good taste? Probably not, but I respect their "ends justify the means" attitude.

Good taste shouldn't be the sole arbiter of social reform.:)

By your logic, news media are exploiting the situation far more than anyone else by publicizing an incident that shouldn't be considered national news by any legitimate stretch of the imagination.:)

So, it's "OK" to equate some freak killing and trying to eat another human being to my having a burger for lunch today?

That is PRECISELY what PETA was doing.

The really SICK part is that they were indeed attempting to "cash in" (not financially, but definitely in a media-whore way - I strongly suggest you acquire a dictionary and look up "analogy" :scowl: ) on the pain and suffering of a family.

I never cared for these jerkoffs to start with, but this just hammers the last nail in their coffin in my heart.

Besides, some group of brainless twits telling me that my dogs are SLAVES just shows how freakin' out of touch with reality they are.

Social reform? Here's some social reform, how about we take these pinheads and find a nice island for them to live on, and let the rest of us have some social reform?

I cannot believe that attitude. Just to be clear in case you are unfamiliar with the murder. I don't mean to be inflammatory so the following is PG rated but there are situations where common sense and good taste must rule over "the end justifies the means." The kid ( I call him a kid because he was 1/2 my age) was stabbed 40 to 50 times, beheaded and gutted on the bus and the nut job killer consumed some of the poor kid's flesh. The killer also taunted the cops outside the bus with the decapitated head. You still want to tell me that the "end justifies the means" and you are still willing to give PETA the benefit of the doubt?

If they both involve inhumane treatment of living beings, I see a connection. I'm not working as their advertizing agent, but wouldn't it be nice if a progressive reform could come out of a "senseless tragedy?"

I understand analogies. People cash in on tragedy all the time, take our current administration for instance.:)

I'm sorry you don't appreciate having an advocacy group trying to protect living beings that don't otherwise have any access to representation in our system.

I do.:)

Aren't you trying to make an argument against this not having anything to do with meat processing? That's not too far from the end result of most cattle that make it onto your plate.:)

Wrong, read my post previous to that about them and you will understand..

They are cashing in on the air-time that this incident has caused to promote their agenda just like Phelps, that is something the media is not doing..

Human life > Animal life.

Nice try though...rofl.

Wow....just.....wow. There is nothing else I can say to someone with that cold and callous of an attitude towards human life.
I'm not seeing how I was cold or callous towards human life anywhere.

I appreciate that it's a disturbing story. Meat processing plants are disturbing as well. Read "Fast Food Nation," I really can't recommend that book enough. They're bad for both humans and for animals.

I think our main point of contention is that you think that humans are by their nature entitled to significantly higher levels of treatment than other living things. I like humans, I like animals. Treat everyone well.:)

Yup. They both are effective utilizers of media exposure. We wouldn't be arguing about either of them if they weren't because we wouldn't have heard of them.
that is something the media is not doing..
Actually, the media directly benefits in terms of gross income by covering stories that are scandalous or disturbing like this at the expense of real news because they attract more viewers.

More viewers for ghoulish and "entertainment" media = more money. That's cashing in, and at the expense of valuable information that we probably should be focused on like elections, wars, poverty, famine, etc.

I'm still sticking with my statement that this isn't real news. People die in unpleasant ways all the time. If this was part of a larger issue of bus related murders you'd probably convince me, but yeah, this is watercooler talk.:)
Human life > Animal life.
I'm not as inclined to make blanket statements like that.:)

Which part of my statement bothered you? The part where I advocated progressive reform or the part where I suggested something positive could come from something negative?

They're both kinda crazy notions, I agree.:)

How about the part where you advocate traumatising the family of an innocent murder victim by tastelessly promoting PETA's agenda?

Take a look at your teeth. You are evolved to eat meat, among other things. Now take a look at a few nature documentaries. Animals routinely slaughter other animals for food in the most brutal and terrifying ways imaginable. The panicked chase, the claws to the hindquarters, the jaws to the throat, ripping and tearing living flesh from the still-conscious victim.

Slaughterhouses are more humane than nature, period. PETA are just a bunch of self-serving, meddlng parasites making a living off of pushing their fake morality on others.

And yes, the leaders of PETA are laughing all the way to the bank, like all other special interest groups.

I'm pretty sure that the bus beheader is a wee bit more to blame for the family's trauma. PETA's not being as sensitive as they could be, but sometimes toes get stepped on when trying to march.

I am not a vegetarian. I am, however, willing to listen to the arguments of those who have views on how to treat the animals we depend on for work, pleasure, company, as well as food, and materials.

And that's the only standard we should aim for?

By your logic, humans have been savagely killing humans for our entire walk along this muddy planet. What lunchbus guy did wasn't really much of a step out of the ordinary, and therefore anything short of that as our fate is something we should be thankful for.
Slaughterhouses are more humane than nature, period. PETA are just a bunch of self-serving, meddlng parasites making a living off of pushing their fake morality on others.
I don't believe they're being insincere. You may not agree with their morality, but that doesn't make it any faker than the alternative views.:)
And yes, the leaders of PETA are laughing all the way to the bank, like all other special interest groups.
Again, I truly don't believe that people involve themselves with PETA to acquire material wealth. I believe it is an ethical position, and again, one I tend to agree with.

I'm sure that PETA and other groups are started by regular folks with the best of intentions. However, history demonstrates that whenever a group gains political power and fundraising clout, it gets co-opted by the ambitious and corrupt and becomes a cash cow and power base for the leaders, who then perpetuate their position by any means necessary.

So, I stand by my statements on the grounds that you are arguing from a fictional position. PETA has propagandized the issue out of all reality for the financial and political perks that the corrupt leaders enjoy. And that makes their morality fake.

Wow, I don't think I'm living up to my role as the bitter and cynical one in this debate.:)

:D

If there's one thing I've learned in my 43 years on the planet, it's that corruption and greed will fight harder for their place than kindness and morality; The corrupt and greedy will unhesitatingly stop at nothing, while the gentler folks will question themselves, and in so doing, cede the advantage to the 'dark side.'

It sucks, but it's human nature.

So the solution clearly is: "just give up."

You're not considering a career in writing children's books, are ya?

wait wait, so you're saying that a man, who's got nothing to do with pro abortion and gay marriage (openly and politically), who's been brutally murdered, is being told, it's your own fault you got killed, then your country shouldnt be pro abortion etc., by some christian sekt?

they're not christian just because they say they are.

It's groups like the WBC that make me wish there actually was a God. I'm sure if there were, they'd have a nice corner of Hell reserved just for them.

These people exemplify some of the worst hypocrisy imaginable, and give organized religion a bad name. I can't imagine Jesus, Buddha, or Mohammed picketing funerals like this - most likely, in their own minds, they have superceded the moral values of their supposed gods and are now drowning in their own self-righteousness. This is nothing new; religious hate groups and splinter cells have existed for thousands of years, and will never disappear completely until we all come together with the understanding that none of us will ever understand the mind of god, if it even exists at all, and that we should stop trying to force our own narrow minded views onto others.

I preach salvation through skepticism, my brothers. All ye who would hear, follow me. Or, better yet, follow yourself.

So the solution clearly is: "just give up."

No, the solution is to fight your own battles, and not get sidetracked by the agendae of fanatics and the corrupt. There's certainly room for improvement in the treatment of animals, and many other areas, as well. Radical organisations like PETA do more harm to their causes than good, by driving away the reasonable majority. Think for yourself, already!

And don't try to out-cynic me. . . I get more cynical things in my breakfast cereal. . . :D
