That 1 Guy

Loosely bass related, definitely effects related, so I thought you guys would appreciate this dude.

Mike Silverman, aka That 1 Guy is a classically trained upright bassist turned live-looping, plumbing-wielding, one-man-grindcore-band who plays a freakish instrument of his own concoction called The Magic Pipe.

I encountered him a few years back soon after his first album was released, and since then I've waited patiently for him to come to my little neck of the woods. It was well worth the wait. I loved the first album, but to see him live was just nothing short of awe inspiring.

His new album, The Moon Is Disgusting, shows that he's come a long way in a few years, carving out his own genre and developing his style to a fine art that is truly and absolutely unique. Not only does it bend you mind when you think about how he's creating what you're hearing, but his lyrics are devilishly clever, laced with innuendo and at times poignant remarks, and at other times it's just hilarious rhyming nonsense!

He's currently on tour, still in Oz, but he's heading back to the US soon. I strongly encourage you to go see him, even if it's not your cup of tea, because his show is about more than just the music, it's about breaking down barriers between you and your music. He WILL inspire you, I guarantee it.

i got the oppurtunity to see that1guy back a few years at an aquabats concert (no, im not an aquabats fan). he totally stole the show! i immediately went and bought 'songs in the key of beotch' from the gift shop and listened to it a whole lot.

so i consider myself a relatively long term fan of this guy. very excited about 'the moon is disgusting.' i've watched some videos and he's obviously come a long way musically (for better or worse), incoporating new effects and more complex loopings.

and i didnt know he was an upright bassist! i guessed it, but couldnt be too sure. hmm he gives me some good ideas for a new kind of electric bass...

Show me a definition of grindcore and I'll show you a bunch of words open to interpretation.

I got it from his very own myspace, but you may not have encountered all the styles of all of his songs. Besides, what the heck does it matter what pigeon hole he's in, it's just kick ass cool!

i just wanted to quote this because it's amazing.

From Wikipedia:

Grindcore, often shortened to grind, is an evolution of crust punk, most commonly associated with death metal. Grindcore is characterized by heavily distorted, down-tuned guitars, blastbeats, crust punk-influenced riffing, short songs, and a vocal style consisting of growls and higher-pitched vocals, often similar to those found in black metal. Lyrical concepts range from social and political issues to gore and horror to humor.

Personally, I don't even like grindcore that much, I was just saying that That 1 Guy does not show any of those characteristics. That's all. He does do very cool, quirky music, and I am not debating that. He's just not grindcore.
