Outside of extremely collectible instruments, like '59 Les Pauls, I think vintage prices were low until the very late 80's. I recall that you could frequently find pre-CBS Fender basses for under a grand up until the early 90's.
A friend of mine told me that when he was shopping for his first "real" guitar (a Strat) in 1979, the guy was telling him that for the same money he could buy a late 50's Strat he had on sale. (he bought the '79).
That natural refin is gorgeous.![]()

i don't care how rich you are...$2500 is still a lot of money!Depends on what one considers low. I was offered a stack knob Jazz in the early 80's for $2500 which was a bunch of money at the time.
Actually Fender started in 1946...

Detlef Schmidt at Amazon type Fender precision basses into books they are taking pre orders $23.10 unbelievable pics and great history lesson.....
Not sure about #1, but I saw #1054 or maybe #1045. It's been a few years ago. It was a low four digit number at Fly By Night music in Neosho, MO. It had steel saddles on the bridge, but the phenolic saddles were in a paper bag tucked under the strings. It was in good playable shape!
ok then it couldn't have been you. this was like 2005-06. beautiful job, btw!JimmyM I restored it in 1999 it was a mess the neck was defretted the rod was broken and the body was stripped the pickup was broken.... everything is original now except the pickguard the finish and the frets all electronics pots cap knobs pickup rewound original bridge and covers are original cost more to restore than I paid for it... October body 11/19/51 neck. I hand cut the pickguard from .062 bakelite...
