The 2008 Stanley Cup Playoff Thread

Great, great game! Big nod of approval for Pittsburgh's effort, tonight. Hard-fought, fast-paced, and well-executed on both sides. Crosby had a fantastic individual effort... Fleury made some great saves, as did Osgood... great stuff all around! Good goals by Crosby (x2), Franzen, Hall, and Samuelsson. That's the sort of hockey I love to see!

Well done, Pittsburgh!

Sadly I missed the first two periods due to praise band rehearsal, and I have yet to see any highlights, so your recap is appreciated. What I saw of the third was better overall effort by the Pens and the Wings trying to kick it up into top gear a bit late. Both goalies had some great saves. The Hall goal, while arguably a bit fluky, was, imho, the result of a hard second and third effort by a grinder who burned the Wings quite a bit when he played for the Predators. The last change seemed to make a big difference in the matchups and the face-off circle. I'm disappointed in the loss, but it was a good hard-fought game in the third.

My hope is that Holmstrom is okay. I thought that was a pretty rough move on him in the later stages of the game. It was good to see that the referees were at least watching after Homer a little bit, though. Normally you can pretty much decapitate the man, and the refs don't care. Would have liked to have seen the last one called, though.

It should have been called. It was far worse than Kronwall leveling someone and having momentum pull him off his feet. No excuse not to, but I can't comment on the officiating overall since I didn't see the first two periods.

That said, in the first couple of shifts, Maltby got away with a very, very late hit on a Pittsburgh player... can't recall whom he hit, but it was easily four or five seconds after the player made the pass. Definitely should have been called. I'd like to see a different angle replay on the big hit he dished out near the end of the game... seemed to me like he was up a little higher than he should have been; might have left his feet, which should be called, too. Can't say for sure on that one, though, as the only view I saw, his skates were well obscured by the boards.

Didn't see it, but if that's the case he should have been called for it. The one in the third I couldn't tell, but I also thought he was a bit high, but the skates were obscured. I'd like to see the reverse angle to make the call.

As far as Crosby goes, I again thought he played great. I know a lot of people say quite a bit that he's a diver and a whiner and whatnot. I've never really watched him all that much, but from what I've seen in this series, it seems rather unjustified. Keeping in mind that he's not even 21, I say he handles himself very well, at least in the interviews I've paid any attention to. Like a lot of hockey fans, I grow kind of weary of hearing his name all the time, even in games that Pittsburgh's not a part of, but he's clearly a very talented guy.

What I saw he played well, that's all there is to be said. You've got to give credit where its due.

Can't say I'm too disappointed with the loss. The Wings held in there 'til the end, which is all you can ask for in a losing effort. Great to see Franzen get a very strong goal. And dang it, Samuelsson's making me look bad, here. I warned you guys before the series that he's pretty frustrating to a lot of Wings fans, but he certainly hasn't been in this series.

Good summary. Sammy is finally starting to hit the net with his shots. Imho, it's a welcome change from his hard shot off the glass, big rebound picked up the other team.

Seems to me that Lilja has worn out his welcome, again. He actually played pretty good for a few games, but these last two have been awful for him. I'm thinking Chelli will be in for the next one. Rafalski wasn't up to snuff tonight, either, but he's more often than not on his game. Stuart made a great, great play on Crosby early in the game to prevent him from getting a clear breakaway, but then he made a bad play coughing it up in the defensive zone... oddly enough, to Crosby. ...

Actually, you're being too kind. If Cheli can't play, I say bring up Kyle Quincey or Derek Meech. Lilja's wipeout was a big reason Hall was able to muck and get that third goal. Rafalski was due to have an off game, he's not Lidstrom ;) He'll rebound and be back to form.

It really wasn't a great night for the Wings' defensemen, but hey, that's what happens when some really talented offensive players are on their game enough to make some really talented defensemen look bad. Full credit to the Pens'.

Again, you're dead on. Give the Pens credit for a great game.

A couple days off, and we're back to it on Saturday night. No matter the result, if it is as entertaining as tonight's game, I'll be glad. Would like to see the Wings come away with the win, if possible, but if not, well, then we've got ourselves a series, haven't we, fellas? :)

It's a series already. I will ask this, not having seen the first 2 periods. By no means am I trying to take away from how the Pens played. Were the Wings coming out as if they thought they had the series in hand and eased up a bit like in the first three rounds or did the Pens force them onto their heels. The one big criticism I have of this Wings team is that at times they seem to lack the "killer instinct" - if you've got the other team down and your foot on their throat, you don't let off, you push down and push down HARD to finish them off. That to me is the biggest difference between the '97 and '98 team and the recent years.

I didn't think so. The Pens came out and stuck it right to Detroit from the start. They matched big hits all over the ice. The Pens got out and started skating for once. They spread Detroit out over the ice finally, and took advantage of the lesser skilled RW players, which is what you have to do against a great team like the RW's.....and this is what you get when the RW's are only allowed six men on the ice! :D

What an excellent game. I was too exhausted emotionally to post anything objective after the game. That game wasn't over until the clock hit 00.00. Yowsah!

But, it was unfortunate to see us continuing with the stupid penalties. Hal Gill made me so mad last night. Go ahead and rough up a guy camping in front of the goal, but don't pull that crap like he did on Holmstrom. That was not cool Gill, and I LOVE the Pens.

I give props to Staal, Talbot, and Gonchar for playing great games. Those guys, who most people probably don't even know, made some valuable contributions last night. Especially Gonchar on defense, and Staal as a PK'er. I really like the way Staal plays, and I hope the Pens lock him up for years to come. Talbot just seemed to be all over the ice making little plays here and there that made a difference.

I thought the Pens were 2-for-3 on my keys. We got traffic in front of Osgood and matched the RW intensity all night long. We just kept it up with the dumb penalties.

You aren't going to hear any "Pens RULE, RW's SUCK" out of me this morning. The Pens have a lot of work to do to win three more games.

One more thing.....man, it was cool to see Daryl Sydor out there. He was really good back in the day.

Again, thanks for the recap as I missed the 1st 2 periods.

Understandable - playoff hockey at a high level does that to fans of BOTH teams :)

Glad to see you calling a spade a spade. +1

Agreed about Staal. He's definitely under the radar far more than he should be, and he's got much more upside to him than Talbot, imho. Gonchar I think is out to redeem himself a bit from the '98 Finals against Detroit.

And you were putting yourself down for your analysis earlier... told you. ;) Keep it up!

And the Wings have a lot of work to do to win two more :) Glad to see you're keeping it classy. Some of my coworkers were trying to get me to bury the Pens yesterday and I refused to - 2 wins is a nice start, but meaningless without winning the 3rd and 4th ones.

One more thing.....man, it was cool to see Daryl Sydor out there. He was really good back in the day.

I think his offensive upside has diminished but he always had pretty good hockey sense when he was on the ice. A good move to put him in.

I actually thought Detroit had the start they wanted. They showed up to play, in my opinion. Both teams were trading chances for a bit, but then the Wings buckled down for a while. I think the shots were somewhere around 9 to 1 in favor of the Wings down to the last two and a half minutes of the first. Fleury and the Pens' were coming up huge, and then Stuart on the breakout banks one off the skates of Zetterberg and it ends up on Hossa's stick. Pittsburgh got the first goal, then we took some penalties, and Crosby pots another one in the 2nd.

I don't know about anybody else, but from my vantage point, the game was the most fun of the three so far to watch. I like to ask myself, "If this were the first hockey game somebody ever saw in their life, what would they think of it?" -- I would think they would be pretty entertained.

The third was quite entertaining. I can only assume the 1st and 2nd were similar. It was gripping drama - high caliber playoff hockey, there's NOTHING like it. As a Wings fan, it was my least favorite of the three to watch, due to the loss (had to say it ;) ) but... the Pens played pretty darn well, as a hockey fan it was a GREAT game to watch since the Wings didn't give up and kept pressing until the end.

Game 4 is going to be a barnburner.

On an unrelated note, the word is that the coming Winter Classic is going to be Detroit vs. Chicago at Wrigley Field.

My wish would have been to have the game at The Big House in Michigan. 111,000+ people would be truly something to see, and my best buddy's uncle-in-law lives right down the road, so it would have worked out great for us. :)

Not having seen most if the first two, last nights game was very entertaining. That is the type of PO hockey I like to see. Both teams showed up. Brooks Orpik was like a one man wrecking crew out there. What did have, like 4 hits in one shift. That's entertainment.

A great game. Pittsburgh still has their work cut out for them though. They got away will some penalties, (high stick on Lidstrom) but got called on a couple iffys. (Holmstrom, I'm looking at you. A couple of legit cross checks, but I did see a couple of smart dives).
Pittsburgh still needs to push more. I saw them backing off on a power play!
The one spot with no whistles for 5 minutes was great. That's what Pittsburgh needs to do to have a chance, but even doing that Detroit can keep up. I think Osgood is a weak link. If the Pens can get a shot off, they can burn him.
As great as Datsyuk and Zetterburg are it, seems like Fransen and Samulsson really have it out for the Penguins. I was screaming at the Pittsburgh D every time they were on the ice.

As great as Datsyuk and Zetterburg are.....

Datsyuk was the one RW I feared the most coming into the series. I haven't heard a peep out of him in three games on the offensive end. He is either struggling like Malkin all of the sudden, or the Pen's D has taken him out of his game like the RW's have to Malkin.

Zetterburg....I really like that guy. He's great. I can not cheer against him.

Wings score, a close up of Crosby

Penalty called on either team, a close up of Crosby.

An interview after the period on the ice with Crosby.

He's the best young player in the league.

He's the best player of his generation.

He's playing in the Stanley Cup Finals.

His league is looking for a savior.

He may be that savior.

What part of this are you struggling with?

As for NBC's "homo points", are you sure you're not feeling a little conflicted? Seems like an awfully strong reaction to the broadcast coverage of a hockey game.......... anything you want to share with the group?;)

Funny stuff, guys.

I was on a road trip to Philly on the Gov't dime...& I only caught the 2nd period last night. Great action...the way it oughta be. Hopefully, the curious tuned in last night...but I doubt it. This morning, I asked my traveling mate what he thought of that great game last night & he started yapping about the Celtics-Pistons game.

Not to derail the thread at all, but I thought I would pass this along to the dedicated hockey fans that are taking part, here:

I've been reading a bit about the young Canucks player who died earlier today. I never saw him play (that I'm aware of), but his death sort of grounded my perspective today, in a way that hasn't happened since Jiri Fischer's heart stopped during a game. Terror gripped a lot of hockey fans, players and personnel that day.

(

that is tragic. Horrible to hear of someone leaving us so young.

I never saw that Jiri Fischer incident so detailed, only snippet footage. It is scary. It reminds me a little of Chris Pronger in 98, I think against the Wings, when a shot hit him in the chest and his heart started skipping. I was watching that live. He skated two steps and fell flat like a stone on the ice unconscious. Everyone thought he'd bought it.

Me and my wife used to play a lot. She's an amazing defense(man)?, anyway, one day she took a puck to the throat from a slap shot from about 10 feet. No breath, just wild coughing and convulsions and her looking at me with the terrified eyes of someone who is drowning. Pretty scary scene driving to and dragging your barely breathing wife into the emergency room, both in full hockey gear, her still in skates, as her throat swells ever close to closing completely. That was a fun 48 hours in the hospital. The next week, she skated onto the rink wearing a throat guard, much to the respect of the all guys we played with... she's pretty tough.

The Fischer incident was mad scary, but fortunately he came through. The Pronger incident was against the Wings, it was a Dimitri Mironov shot. As much as I think Pronger is a dirty d-bag of a player who should have received the same treatment of Simon for his myriad suspensions, you can't help but be concerned for someone in that situation, and I'm glad he recovered.

I'm thankful your wife made it, I pray that I never have to see my wife or children in a similarly perilous situation. But for her to come back and play a week later, that's definitely courageous. *smacks boards in front of bench with stick in salute*

Those first two points are arguable at best. After this season, I'd say he isn't even the most talented young player on the Penguins. Certainly not the league or his generation.

Lots of people are in the Stanley Cup finals, yet I haven't seen too many ridiculous close ups of Maxime Talbot.

The league is always looking for a savior, or the next "Great One" (see cash cow). He is being built up to a point that there is a very slim chance he could ever match the hype around him. Is he gonna score 50 in 39? 200 point season? Pfft, doubt it.

And you can't blame NBC, he is literally the only player on either team that they have heard of.

And yeah, totally sucks about Bourdon.

The part of him being the "best young player" and the "best player of his generation".

Datsuyk and Zetterburg are far superior to Crosby, yet all they show is Crosby. What a concept.

I want to watch hockey, not a Sydney Crosby-fest.
