The 5-String club Part 2

P9050510.JPG

Here's my 5er.
I'd like a number as well.

Forgive the "Fender" logo. I just like the look. The Fender logo is a big part of the P bass look. I left "Pro Tone" and it still has Squier info on the back of the headstock. No fraud is intended. I have some modding left to do and I'll then join the other clubs. I removed the pickguard years ago, to copy it to repair a friend's Pro Tone, and misplaced it. The current partial plate is just temporary to make the bass functional.

would have been to ask if it was a DIY, or having someone else do the work, and I would have suggested that opening up the pots to clean them would have been cheaper.
But since parts are that cheap, and you're doing it your self just take good notes and get the same parts:)

I put the new pots in, and while I was in there, I reversed the connections to the push/pull switch on the volume pot to make 'active' the pushed-in position. I also re-touched every solder connection in the bass. Something helped, whether it was the pots or the solder touch-up, because the treble sound of the bass seemed to open up. It doesn't sound as pinched as it did before.

The jury is still out on the bass - it plays ok, but I don't think I want to kick out the $$ for new electronics when I am GASing for one of the Brice SS 5ers from Rondo. I'm told they should be in stock in Jan or Feb. They have gotten decent reviews here previously, so I am interested... Time will tell....

Anyone pick up a new 5-string lately?

(I'm already a member, 302)

Well, I’ve had this Lightwave for a while (next to a cab I'd gotten about the same time), but it’s new for this thread. Got it new but 1/2-price, so I figured I'd try something light-weight.

Pretty cool instrument, but for some reason I can’t bond to the red color and the small body. Maybe subconsciously I’m wantin to hide my big belly, haha. I keep it around, as I’m getting older, and if/when I need a light bass I might be glad I have it. :o

#550 im2jazzc4you - Holy Sadowsky's, Batman! Looks mighty fine and I bet it sounds as good as it looks!

Marko5657 - I've always had a curiosity about the Lightwave basses. How's the sound? I understand the lightwave pickups require batteries and/or recharging. Do you know how long batteries or a fresh charge supposed to last? I think their Space Bass looks fantastic!

Sounds great. Every note rings very clear, and literally everyone I’ve played it with stated that they prefer the sound over the other basses.

From what I've read, the sound relates strongly to what strings ya put on it, but I’ve never experimented with that.

Many who’ve played them mention (complain) that the sound is so accurate/clear that they find it too unforgiving, but I’ve never found that to be an issue, and I don’t consider myself a great bass player.

It has a power supply and supposedly a 15-minute charge gives ya… ah, I forget exactly, but many hours before needing recharged, and you can plug it in uncharged and play it.

Sorry I don’t have more info to share... other than cranking the truss rod to lower the action and readjusting the little pickup thingies with an allan wrench, I really haven’t messed with it that much. I did gig it maybe six/seven shows, and it really delivers. :)
