The 610 Search Continues...........

Let me help you with your list of "current contenders" based on the type of music you play, your basses and string types and your amps:

In order of what I think would work best for you and in a couple of words why:
1. Bergantino NV610 - does old school and new cool equally well, best all around cab on the market today IMHO
2. Mesa Powerhouse 610 - really brings out the best of a Stingray
3. LDS 610 - will custom design a speaker and cab combo that will work well and meet most of your needs
4. Epifani UL610 - does the modern and hifi stuff really well but won't have the same grind or thick bottom end of the Berg or the Mesa.
5. Schroeder 610L - haven't heard this one yet but other Schroders I've tried sounded good but a little more mid focused that the others above.
6. Ampeg 610 - not really in the same league as the others on the list. A good cab but lacks some clarity on the low end and range on the top end.

Of the bunch, the Berg is the "one ring to rule them all" cab, but you can't go too wrong with any of the ones on your list. In fact, go used on any of them and you'll get your money back if you decide to sell it if it isn't right for you.

PS - seek out TB member Tom Bowles (not sure if I spelled his name right) I'd bet that he currently ownes nearly every one the the cabs on your list and could probably give you some real valuable A/B compairson insights.

I loved the Berg NV610. I played it using one of the same rigs that I have at home: Eden WT800B and MM StingRay H piezo 5 Fretless. I also played the same rig with Berg NV215, Berg AE410, and Berg NV412.

All of these cabs were awesome.

The Berg NV412 was the best sounding to me. Not by a large margin, but it just worked the best.

FWIW, the NV412 is freaking amazing with my Mesa Boogie 400+.
Also, very, very good tone with Eden Nemesis ENX260 but obviously not as loud. And very good with MarkBass Little Mark II.

YMMV.

Thanks in advance to all who respond to this thread. I am looking for an new cab and have more rather than less decided that a 610 would best suit my needs. I am looking for opinions and thoughts from those of you who have, past or present, owned a 610 cab.

I realize that there are other speaker choices with regards to a big cab, but for this thread let’s confine ourselves to the animal known as the 610.

Also, I understand that there are significant differences in the 610 design and overall tone. You’ll better understand my prediciment and confusion as you read further.

My Background Considerations:

Amp : Demeter HBP pre, QSC PLX 1602 power amp.

Cabs I have, had, or played:

Epifani UL S2 210, 115, 212; Acme B1, B2, Ampeg15E, 810E, Mesa 410.

Basses: Predominantly 4 String with a Hipshot extended tuner on all basses. I use the low D at least 50% of the time. Basses include a P with flats (maple board), P with rounds, J with TI flats, J with rounds, EBMM Stingray, Fretless J with rounds.

Music Styles: It really varies. Blues at times, classic rock (more late 60’s & 70’s than earlier or later ie: 80’s), modern rock (think Porcupine Tree if you can), electronic (STS9 and Sphongle), and a bit of ?Gatemouth Brown? Who Knew!

The “Current Contenders” from what I have been able to see, hear and research in no particular order are:

1. The Epifani UL-610
2. Bergantino NV610
3. Messa Powerhouse 610
4. Schroeder 610L
5 Ampeg 610
6. LDS 610

Other considerations:

So, I have had Epi’s in the past and loved the hi-fi sound and the ability to mostly disengage the tweeter to “age” the sound. I have appreciated the 810E to thump through a mix.
Where does the Mesa sit in this picture? Between the Berg and the Epi?

Anyways, thanks again for the input. Please respond with as much detail as possible. Please offer other considerations that I have not considered. I can’t thank the members enough for their input!

I have been using an Ashdown ABM 610 for a few months now. Not going to analyze it very much since I think I lack the experience to compare it to many others, but here's something:

It's three sealed 210's and sounds like it too, tight and "growly" (whatever it means...).

Had a pretty good rock tone with a BDDI in bypass mode and through a generic PA power amp.

I like the vintage-ish looks.

It was quite affordable in the UK, not sure how it is overseas.

I was looking into getting of those for a bit. But many many dollars for one over here. And they do look so cool! I'm glad they sound just as good.

IMO I would say go for the Mesa 610. I currently own and use one myself and can agree sure it is a big/heavey cabinet, but it makes up for it in it's massive but very clear sound output. Basically gives you the sound of a 810 in a 610 package. I have heard nothing but good things about the Berg's as well, however I have never owned or played through one personally.

IMO the Berg 610 is unmatched. While doing the search for "my" sound I played through most of the cabs that have been listed and for me and my setup (73 svt) the Berg was by far the best. Take your set up to a local berg dealer and see for yourself...thats what I did. You wont be sorry. Trust us! :hyper:

I found another recent thread posted by someone else in an almost identical situation. I have taken into account the replies to that post as well. Here's the link:

The field narrows with each passing post. Currently, the top three, to me at the moment, are the as follows with my concerns for each.

Berg NV610.........seems to hold the #1 position of those who have responded to these posts. I *can not* ignore the overwhelming praise this cab gets. My concerns about this cab reside in the very lows and to a lesser extent, the highs. I am not interested in a Marcus tone. I almost never slap and only on occasion use a pick. It is the only one of the three not ported.
Can the Berg compete in the low end compared to the 2 ported cabs?


Mesa Powerhouse 610............Another favorite by many who posted. The questions that remain about this cab are
1. How tight is the very low end. I know the Epi's are a bit pillowy at the very bottom. I expect the Berg is tight at the very low end but wonder if it is as tight and as low as the Mesa. How silimar can the Mesa and Berg be with the Mesa's tweeter off and some EQ applied?
2. Conversly, with EQ and the tweet up can the Mesa come close to the Epi? Or likewise the Epi w/EQ come close to the Mesa?

3. The Epi and Berg seem to impart a flavor, or signature (for lack of a better term) to their sound. Does the Mesa have one? If so, what would you call it? Would you call it sterile, or neutral?

Epifani UL-610.....Not mentioned nearly as often as the other two. However, I am fimilar with the Epi Ul sound in a general way, having owned the 115/210/212.....The pro's/cons of the UL-610 TO ME are the weight and the beautiful hi-fi sound. I did find that it may have seemed to sound better in a simple mix or solo as opposed to loud dense mix.It is light, easy to move. It has a beautiful deep low-lows and the dropped D I constantly use was clear and full.

I wish to h*** I could line up all three at once, but reality is otherwise. Please keep the comments coming, it IS a great help.

Something in the "less" column to consider: two vertically stacked 2x12s. Lots of builders have 2x12s that you might want to check out.
