The Ampeg 810 is my Holy Grail

Just got back from a gig (Emerald Ballroom, Mt Clemens MI) and I rocked a GK 700rb-II with an Ampeg 810.

That #### destroyed the stage.

The sound that came out of that cab was beautiful. Punchy, grunty, full, loud... just pure BLISS!

I've generally struggled with sound on stage in the past, but since I got this 810 I have absolutely ZERO problems hearing myself on stage... and that sound is just PHENOMENAL.

I know theres the Berg 610 that is alot of people's Holy Grail of bass cabs, but dammit, my Ampeg 810 was only $300 and it just destroys.

Before I got the 810, I thought ported was the way to go... I played 12's before that, but since I got that cab its just 'right'. It sit in the mix where it needs to be and its just got this presence that's seemingly unmatched (granted I haven't had the opportunity to play the berg yet).

I know the thing is heavy, but its got a towel bar and wheels which make it ridiculously easy to transport. Ampeg 810's for life!

I saw a CL ad for one for $400 so I sent out a trade feeler... it was a woman who responded by email.

I figured it was some dude's wife who wanted to get rid of it because it was taking up space so I replied saying I'd give $300 for it.

She said "let me talk to my husband". I knew at that point the cab was mine... and I certainly wasn't wrong! $300 is an amazing deal.

And on top of that. Turns out the cab I bought from the husband/wife was my current guitar player's old bassist... and they both life out in BFE compared to where I live.

Crazy isn't it?

I've never played through a sealed bass cab before. Are any of Ampeg's smaller cabs sealed? I just looked though their website quick and they specifically mention that their two 8x10 models are sealed, but don't say for the other models. Anyone know?

+1 on the ole' 810 cab, there's nothing quite like 'em, it's true. I got mine for free from the trash at my old rehearsal space, all bad speakers though so $500 in new speakers of my choice & I felt like I had a new old cab :)

Yes, most other Ampeg cabs are ported (410, 610, V2 etc) but the V4 isn't!

I just today was moving some stored gear around in my large band trailer and was admiring my holy grail rig that includes not one but two of the square back 8-10s along the matching SVT head. These 3 pieces I purchased from the original owner. This dude had played with Pete Seegar, Orleans and Peter Frampton. This rig dated to 1973 and is just amazingly awesome. :D:D:D

The 210AV, as well as the new 2X10 and 1X15 Portaflex cabs, are all sealed as well. I'm running a stack of two 210AVs right now, I'm pretty happy with it so far. They're incredibly light, too. One day, I'll have an NV610.
