Here is my amp, the TC Electronic BH500 and my Fender JazzBass Special. The neck on the bass and the knobs are not original. It was in pretty bad shape when i got it, and i've replaced all the weird electronics that was in it with with genuine fender electronic. The Jazz pickup is a standard fender pup and the neck p-bass pickup is a seymour duncan quarter pounder pickup. i think the neck is a mighty mite neck. it was on it when i got it. planning on replacing it when i get the money. the amp is great, very versatile. i'm planning on getting a 4x10 TC cabinet.

An Ampeg SVT-HD with a Cetec Gauss 5181 Karlson coupler cabinet. It's an 18" slot-loaded cabinet with a Gauss 4882 18" driver. Nimble for an 18" cabinet. Not "loose" like most of them.
Over to the left there's a sealed 4x12" cabinet with four JBL E-120 speakers, but it usually doesn't get used for bass. BTW, I have an 8x10" for my Ampeg, but I'm really digging this Gauss.

Now that's something I've never seen before. I'd love to play through that, just to check it out. I understand that some 15/18" driver-equipped cabs are not "slow and sludgy". It's all about the cab and loading the driver correctly. Is this more of a "full range" cab, or a "subwoofer" type cab? It sure looks funky!

You know, I'd played through one of these back in the 80's in L.A. using a GK 800RB and sending the highs to a Hartke 2x10", but I was never able to use the crossover in the 800RB. I had to run both cabinets full-range. Neither of them sounded as good crossed-over. In retrospect I think the Gauss handles the mids so well that rolling it off with the crossover made it angry.
So yeah, I've been running it full range and I honestly don't feel like it's missing much in the high end.
As for the speed thing, these cabs have a very odd port arrangement that uses a progressively more restricted port to accelerate the air on its way to those waveguide "wings" and I think that's the secret sauce.
In the 50's they sold plans for Karlson couplers to use for home hi-fi, but the high mids are apparently pretty uneven. No such thing as a free lunch and all that. They do seem to be very efficient and pretty linear in the bottom couple of octaves, though. I'm not sure why they aren't more widely used. I've been thinking of building one and experimenting with the port and waveguide a little. These old Gauss cabs suffer from kind of shoddy construction. I mean, it's OK...I just think I can do better.
