Oh, to follow up on the "this is my second bass" thing, my husband (who is fine with me having this as long as it has a place to live) and I had the following conversation:

HIM: "You already have a bass! Why do you need two?"
ME: "This one is different."
"It's a bass."
"No, this one will sound different from the one I have. It has a different type of pickup."
"It's a BASS."
"You have two different video game systems. Why would you need two? It's the same thing you're saying to me."
"I don't have two X Boxes" (actually he does--an old one and a 360, but whatever)
"But you have two video game systems."
"Well, ...(something about how they're different). All basses do the same thing."
"All video game systems play video games."
"But (something again about how they're sooo different). It would be like you having a bass and a guitar, but not like having two basses."
"Video game systems play video games. Some of those video games have different features and formats that only the certain type of machine will play. Basses have different types of electronics (didn't get into any other differences because they are irrelevant to mine) and make different sounds, and you do different things with those sounds. It works exactly the same."
He wasn't buying it.

Ha, Ha. Sounds like my conversations with my wife who is not a musician but understands it better now. This meme says it all, just swap "Guitar" with "Bass". Congrats!

He plays video/PC games and reads comics, but he's also an incredibly brilliant scholar of Medieval literature with four dead languages (Old and Middle English, Old High German, and Latin) under his belt with translation proficiency in each, and can write and teach circles around anyone I know. But seriously, the rule in my house now is: do I need it (not want it) to do gigs that bring in money? Then it's not an issue. Do I want it? Then something goes out. Funny though, I made those rules more than her I think.

Excuse me, apologies to the both of you. Your man obviously has quite the intelect, and a variety of interests. An atypical outlier of the gamer species. I apologize for confusing him with the run of the mill variety. And apologies to any others out there that don't live in their parents basement, have problems with social interactions, and have more of a virtual life than real one.
I suppose being bass players, no one here would really fit the archetype too closely.

As someone else said, I find the most valid reason for at least a second bass is if one needs repair, you have another to play. This happened to me with my first uke, I thought I only needed one until the pickup went bad and had to go into the shop for a week. The next day I bought another.

I had a pink mini bass painted surf green by Pat Wilkins, he did great job for $250.

Agreed on the two Jags! Sadly, no EB-3 for me--it only comes in 34". I will remember to send him here for his schooling next time!

I have a 70s Japanese copy EB3 shorty that I got for a pretty good price. Plus it has some pretty cool road wear, which I really love (not everyone's cup of tea, but to each their own). AND it has a slotted headstock which I love. If you ever decided to go with an EB3 and didn't want to drop a ton of cash on a Gibson, one of the copy basses might be a good option for you. They're pretty great.

If I could throw my two cents in about the strings, I really enjoy flats on my EB3. Sounds great. I have a shorty Squier Jag and based on my experience with the two, I'd say flats are better suited for the EBs IMO. Tough call though.

It's here, it's here!! Wow! This thing is in near perfect condition. The only thing I can find that's wrong is that the volume knob appears to sit a little wonky. Maybe the post is slightly bent. But that's it! Looks great and plays great. I hate to paint it because it's so shiny and gorgeous, but I don't want two red basses.

But that's it! Looks great and plays great. I hate to paint it because it's so shiny and gorgeous, but I don't want two red basses.

That looks great. I think they look really good together. I'd be very reluctant to paint it. Two obviously very different basses that could be the start of a theme in your house if you display your instruments.

It might sound like it from the conversation, but no, not even a little. He is not musical in any way, shape, or form. He has no rhythm, and is not entirely tone deaf but not too far from it, either (which makes his playing French horn in junior high band a ...choice, but he claims he was not awful at it (which is interesting because even good French horn players aren't that good at French horn! Trust me, I sat right next to them for 10 years in the saxophone section!)).

+1 for the bridge. It'd be a major improvement over the stock bridge. And you could probably find one used to keep up with the bargain theme of the bass!

Very cool bass, btw! I support keeping it red or changing the color. If you do repaint it, you might consider leaving the finish on the neck off and using tru oil on tung oil on the neck instead. Some people don't mind, but I find the finish on the back of the neck for the EB basses to be a bit of a hindrance. I hope the new bass treats you well!
