I had a couple of false starts, but when I started playing more bass than guitar, this is what I landed on circa 1998-99 or so. But didn't stay with that long before going EB/MM Stingray and SWR SM-400S amp and WM 410 cab.

1978 Rickenbacker 4001 through a Yamaha B100 amp. Don't miss the amp - it worked fine, but nothing magical. I missed the Rick until recently - I tried one in a music store. Hummed and buzzed like a banshee. I hate hum and buzz. Problem solved.

1985 - I started with a Memphis P-bass copy that weighed a ton and played through a Gorilla amp that we used as a vocal amp in the first band I was in - in that band I played through my local school's Yamaha 1x15 that I shared with the keyboard player.

The first bass and amp I had available to me were loaners from a minister at church. Unfortunately, I cannot recall the name of the products, but they were both very old at the time.

The first bass and amp that I actually owned was a Magnum Jazz bass and Peavey Basic 40 combo amp. Both of the said products were purchased in the early 80's.

The amp was awful and eventually burned out (ozone and blue smoke!). I ruined the bass when I had Seymour Duncan humbuckers installed in it in an effort to get rid of the noise from the stock pickups.

I'm thinking I got lucky with my white-with purple-pickguard Hohner PJ bass and Solton Bassgun..
Man - that bassgun had a 15" speaker and a few bags of sand as ballast, I swear.. I should know as I had to log it up and down the stairs at my mom and dad's house back in the '80s for every gig

it's funny (sort of) now how unremarkable or certainly not valuable those Rics were back then. oh well. yesterday's garbage becomes today's treasures.

I started with a late 70's Electra Precision copy which I completely gutted. Swapped in a diMarzio pickup, a Badass 1 bridge and a brass nut. I stained it walnut too and spray painted the pick guard black. My one and only attempt at modding in my life. I was young and fearless and I somehow got everything to work properly. The bass played and sounded good and I resold about 2 years later to buy a G&L L2000.

Bass looked something like this before modifications.

First amp was an acoustic 126 combo which I ordered new out of the old Music Emporium catalog. It sounded good when played with a full band but I was never happy with it's "bedroom tone". It was actually very good bedroom-wise if you were shooting for the classic "Billy Sheehan sound" but I somewhat abhor that kind of tone.

It was a pleasure to upgrade from that amp to a GK400b and a Carvin 15" cabinet sporting a silver cone speaker.

76 Kramer 450B aluminum neck, roll and tuck Kustom bass head and matching 2-15 cab in black.

Bought the whole package for $300 1980 dollars. $75 down to walk out with the bass, the rest in weekly bits of $75.

I’d never played anything, but I figured, “Only four strings and every band needs one. How hard could it be? I’m going to be a star!”
