I started out with a 80s Peavey T-40 I wish i had back, For a amp I used a Kustom Casino I think it was PA head and 15in EV in a homemade caz. Know effects. wish i had a picture. You know how you have a fresh egg, when the hen has tears in her eyes.

'77 Fender P-Bass, $300 from a pawnshop in '79. Got it via layaway. Univox guitar amp that wasn't quite working right, hooked up to a 15" speaker I got from Radio Shack. Just the loose speaker, no cabinet. Thought the only thing a cabinet was needed for was to hold the speaker upright. Still got the P.
Ibanez SR885 and Ampeg B2 Head with SVT-1510HE cabinet.
1972....when dinosaurs roamed the earth. A '66 Hofner 500/1 for $60, and a Gibson GA77RVT guitar amp for $40. About as lo-fi a start as you could muster. ;-)

Started on one of these, only mine's had 3 strings,no buttons on the tuners, a hole in the body was hidden by a plywood scratchplate. Pickup was nailed on and it cost £1

Late 70s Hondo P bass clone, sunburst/mapel and a 1/4 inch to RCA conversion box that allowed me to plug into the stereo.
Circa 1980-1, it was a gently used Peavey T-40, a Sunn 200S head and a homebuilt cab with another of the aforementioned Radio Shack 15" musical instrument speaker.
They say the definition of crazy is doing the same thing over and over, and expecting different result.
I kept buying crap for the sake of being different- Eko, Hofner, Gibson, until the day my producer went home in the middle of a session, got me a jazz bass, and we continued...with a usable bass sound.

An "Encore" Jazz copy, and some kind of small practice amp, both purchased from the local pawn shop for $130 in 1984. The amp is long gone, but I still have the bass...as wall decoration.
Some 80s Ibanez Roadstar - should have kept it - and some really old, beaten up Ampeg flip top thing (B15 maybe?). Wasn't very loud.
If still up and running, that amp is probably worth a nice chunk of cash nowadays, it was considered "vintage" when I got it in the 80s, but in those days no one was giving a hoot about them.

The bass was an early '80s Cort P clone in sunburst. My first "proper" bass combo amp was either a used Peavey Basic 40 or Basic 50. But before I could afford that amp, I was playing through the "aux" input of a hand-me-down '60s Electro-Voice stereo receiver/amplifier. All long gone, but fondly remembered.

First bass was a Fender Elite II, (bought on clearance at LaSalle's near Berklee) which I played through a Dean Markley Spectra tube guitar combo amp (30w? 50w? I didn't know watts then) with a sad 10" and a peavey 15" extension cab that a friend found in the trash. Still have the bass (modded though), the combo amp was last seen in service as a scream/vocal amp for an arty punk band. The Peavey 15 cab disappeared in a drunken haze.
Paulabass, Gibson = crap? Maybe just hyperbole there. I own a Gibson bass, among others, and I can say with relative confidence that it's not the crappiest instrument I've ever owned. Pretty sure you're a lifelong musician and as such I respect your opinion. Maybe the story of your experience with this is off-topic, but it has piqued my curiosity. Talk to me.
Oh, and my first bass was a Kent Jazz Bass copy (in a chipboard case) that I played to death and a little Marlboro combo that couldn't keep up with the meekest of drummers.
Got my first bass in 1970, a Harmony H-27 for $45 at a pawn shop. Exactly like this one. (note the cool tort appliques!)
Along with a Kalamazoo Bass 30 combo. It didn't take long to realize this little amp was completely useless next to a couple Fender Showman guitar amps and a hard hitting drummer. lol
