The bass or fx?

I dont usually worry about people's tone, but this video confuses me a little.

Is it just the sound of his bass making the non slapped tone or is there a pedal off camera?
It sorta sounds like a wah to me at times.

Charles bouncing back and forth between that slap tone and that finger tone isn't making sense to me. His tapping sounds like what I'd expect from that slap tone, but the rest doesn't seem to match.

So do you think there is fx or just the bass plus technique?

There's another tone doubling the melody with some drive and filter active in those sections. He might have a DAW automated to switch the FX in and out on cue, but the easy answer is that he's simply playing to a track with those parts on - he clearly plays them alongside the track because you can hear the slap tone overlaying those sections.

That makes sense. For some reason I didn't consider it was in the backing track.. I heard the drums and synth pad, but didn't hear much else. Now that you've said it, it's clear as day. I probably should have listened on something other than my phone.
