The Bassist in Tool

What do yall know about the bassist in Tool? I just bought the CD '10,000 Days' and I am blown away by what I am hearing!

That's the sound I think I'm after. You know...one of those lightbulb moments when you finally figure out what you want.

His style and sound makes me want to start playing with a pic. I've been learning fingerstyle though, and would kinda suck with a pic. But anyway, this guy is gonna move way up to the top of my list of influences.

Hey, it's a good thing to be inspired by something.

I can understand you not knowing his name if you're not that familiar with the band, but if you'd just looked on Wikipedia you could have easily found out his name and come back here to find 20+ threads about him already.

Man, that guy's youtube site looks kool. I'll definitely put that in my faves. Also, thanks for the Tool vids Mr. Hart.

As an aside, are those Wal basses really hard to come by. I was reading that production on those was halted for awhile due to health issues with the founders.

For now, my G&L Tribute L-2000 will have to do. I just bought a Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0...so I've exhausted my gear budget for this year.

Wal basses are very expensive (up in the several thousand dollars range) and probably won't be decreasing in price anytime soon.

JC is a great bassist, but Paul just had some awesome rhythm and really ballsy stuff. If you liked 10,000 Days you should check out Lateralus. My personal favorites were Lateralus and Ænima. Ænima will be played BY JC but a lot of songs on there were written by Paul D'Amour.

Honestly, a lot of JC's sound comes from basses that are no longer made (Wal's...I think no longer made), ridiculously rare and expensive effects (digitech bass whammy...look it up sometime), and some really weird rhythms (like The Pot!!). Closest you can get is probably a nice GK head with some crazy expensive effects and a bass as close to a Wal as you can find...whatever that may be lol.

ive come really close to getting the tone in 'schism' with my ibanez sr400qm. i think a chorus pedal and maybe a wah and ill have the tone of that song down for the most part

Justin chancellor is a personal hero of mine. he joined tool after their original bassist paul d'amour left the band. Chancellor used to be in a band calle Peach, tool actually covers their song "You Lied" on their live album Salival. He plays Wal basses, beautifully handmade basses out of High Wycomb England. he uses a lot of efects pedals too;
