The bassplayer equivalent to U2's The Edge?

Well personally I don`t think they play anything too complicated but that`s not the point
All I was getting at was that without effects their bass parts wouldn`t make the songs the way they do. I mean, imagine Hysteria without the muff or Disposition without delay. Much like the Edge both players heavily rely on effects for what they try to do in their respected bands.And for the record, I`m a huge fan of both
Well, KOL songs as a whole are pretty simple. I'm a HUGE fan of KOL. However, I probably wouldn't even own an album if I started listening to them from their second to last album on.
I've seen them 4 times (should have been 6). First time was at a GREAT small venue in St. Louis that was torn down for a casino. The Features opened up for them (love their album, Exhibit A, by the way). Second time was at a small club in East St. Louis (Illinois). The show was sponsored by Camel and I got an e-vite for it. Maybe 300 people tops (maybe even closer to 200). . .and I think a large portion of them just copied other people's tickets, as they didn't scan them. This was after a European tour and a few months before their aforementioned second to last album came out, Only By The Night. They were a bit sloppy with their new stuff, but it was another great show. . .in a very intimate environment. I went with a very large group of friends to both of these STL shows, which made for an even greater experience.
About 18-months later, I took my brother-in-law to a show in Kansas City, MO. They played at a casino. The size of the venue is about the size of The Pageant in St. Louis (for anyone familiar). My bro-in-law had never seen them. . .and I talked up KOL, saying how much I enjoyed their shows. Anyways, let's just say they didn't put on a great show. They played fine and I enjoyed it, but you could tell they weren't into it. Their lead singer even made a bit of a snide comment about how they're playing in a casino and all. I think the reason they played like this, which is still not an excuse not to play your heart out, was because an overwhelming majority of the Kansas City crowd knew almost none of their songs, especially anything before the current album. Needless to say, I was a bit disappointed. . .
About 6-months ago, I again saw them in Kansas City, at the new arena, the Sprint Center. Had great seats (originally had floor tickets, but it was standing room only. . .and I didn't want to deal with teenagers, really). Anyways, this time, I again went with my brother-in-law and sister. Several other people I knew were there, also. Luckily, this time, they played great! However, I thought the sound guy was a f*&#ing idiot. The low-end was cranked on everything and it sounded BOOMY. Their lead singer had wished the sound guy a happy birthday about 1/2 way through the concert. I was hoping as a gift, they gave him a pink slip. . . I wasn't the only one who thought the sound was boomy. I talked to people that were in 3 very different spots throughout the venue and they thought the same thing.
At least with this Kansas City show, they played balls-out. However, the crowd still didn't know a large portion of their songs. Of course, the crowd went crazy when Sex on Fire started. My biggest disappointment of the night (other than being at a large venue and sound issues) was that they didn't play Trani. To me, that's like their Comfortably Numb. They just have to play it!
A few months back, I bought KOL's Blu-ray, which is a concert at the O2 arena. Even on that mix, the low-end booms a bit. I would love to know if the guy who mixed down that disc is their concert sound guy. :scowl:
I hope KOL gets a bit back to their roots, if you will, on their next album. IMO, they have definitely 'sold out' quite a bit.

Really, the entire post was pretty much off topic. If the forum was titled "Kings Of Leon concert review," I surely would have ignored it...
Properly chaining and configuring effects, then putting them to creative use is a skill of its own that few musicians possess.
The Edge uses effects as his tools, just like his instruments.
Besides playing simple, memorable lines is just as difficult as playing busy stuff.
Pino Palladino has a lot of simple lines that rely on effects.

I think the reason the edge can get away with using the soundscape effects he does is because there is a bassline driving the part underneath it most of the time. I do believe Justin and Chris should be the "Edge bassists" (haven't listened to bootsy much), the difference is they still drive the part as well as provide a cool effected sound. If we are focusing on bassists who use effects as a good part of their main sound I think commerford should be mentioned, even if some of you disagree. All in all though, I think it's just a whole different ball game in the bass world.
Two bass players come to mind for me. I wouldnt say they exactly are famous for the simplicity of their basslines, so in that sense they may not be equivalent to the edge, but they each have massive effect rigs.

i nominate my playing for 'lines that sound stupidest without all the fx.'
seriously, though, the edge is a pretty big influence for me, conceptually... he doesn't sound like anyone else, and while there are things you can do to imitate him with delay and such, he really has an incredibly unique approach and sound.
playing simply and using the effects to create a strong musical statement is much harder than it looks. it's much easier to slap really fast.

awesome. which shows how truly amazing u2 was, since what they did was so simple and yet they were able to turn it into one of the most successful rock bands ever.

i agree with this entirely. i've just been getting into really hardcore effect setups the past year and a half or so, and it's been quite an adventure, and a challenge. i also am influenced by the edge's approach to some of his parts, as well as other guitarists like adrian belew and robert fripp who are not afraid to make music with more than just string vibration.
its not about notes per minute.
