It was Ian McDonald's book "Revolution in the Head" that called it sabotage. Spector's adding of choir and orchestra is more like saboage to me.
Dont forget that Ringo "quit" at that time, someone had to play drums.

Here's a good book about a handfull of Paul's bass lines, and they touch on some of his recording techniques.
