Double Bass The Bergonzifying Transmogrifier for Bass

I can only speak for myself, stick player, but I don't think you're getting many more shots around here. You've made it onto a lot of "block" lists at this point.

Many of us here can figure all kinds of permutations and combinations, and can even do factorials. The fact that you need to repeatedly insist that you can do this isn't impressing anybody.

The OP took time to code up a free app, which is no mean feat. All you've done is try to insist that you're so smart and talented you have no use for said app. It got old a while ago.

Let's recap... I said it in my first post, OP attempted to insult me with a joke, I then reiterated it ONCE in a response to buddyro57.

If you are so thin skinned or you can't handle some dissent, you SHOULD block me.

Perfect for developing music store licks.

im not sure about that. listen to coltrane play giant steps. he thought it was a worthwhile course of study. bergonzi and charlie banacos too. you need to put the exercises in the context of a tune though. just running them doesnt help too much, but run them on a tune and you really get the changes under your fingers and the sound in your ear. great for intonation too. just another tool for the tool box. when trane and other guys go outside you might be surprised to find that many times they are just playing very "inside" on another set of changes using patterns like these and apreggios.

thats true, but he still practiced that stuff, alot, and look where it got him. all im saying is if coltrane practiced it then maybe its not so bad. i just point to giant steps as obvious proof that he used techniques like this, in addition to many other things. he overtly reharmonized many many tunes with that kind of formula (body and soul, confirmation ie 26-2, central park west, countdown (tune up), sattellite, but not for me, just off the top of my head) but he also superimposed it over modal stuff. check out his solo on impressions. he's playing giant steps all over it. he got alot of mileage out of that one exercise.
after all, its just permutations of 4 pitch cells. people spend alot of time doing this with arpeggios, i dont see why a different group of 4 pitches, maybe 1,2,3,5, would be any less valid than 1,3,5,7. you put 1,2,3,5 on a major chord starting on the 9th and you have instant upper structure harmony 9,3,#11,13, with a very familiar finger pattern. i love making things easy, life is hard enough

I don't think using this tool is necessarily going to make someone a mechanical, by-the-numbers player any more than I think it will make them Coltrane.
Unimaginative, uninspired players will make uninspired, unimaginative music no matter what they practice; it's not the exercise's fault.
Likewise, creative players will make interesting music no matter what they practice.
So, practice what inspires you, and make the best music you can.

(for the record, I never liked working on stuff like this as a saxophonist, but as a beginning bassist, I'm doing something similar on my own to learn the fingerboard and where all the places you can play the same note are... obviously, that's not about learning to play a million notes a second the way this is often used, but exercises are just a means to whatever end works for you.)

didn't see 2.0 'til just now. excellent stuff. i could always use more ways to hear basic maj7, min7, dom7, m7b5 chords. any chance of eventually being able to input several notes and having it choose a random four? such as G7#11 or C9?

i know as bass players we're supposed to play the notes, not the numbers. but you can't have too big an arsenal. but honestly, it's perfect the way it is! i can just omit the fifth myself. :P

Hmmm I don't know if the world is ready for a RANDOMIZING Bergonzifying Transmogrifier. That is messing with some very spooky primal forces of nature. I think they tried that at the Large Hadron Collider and it made a micro black hole and shifted polar north backwards and now we are not going to have leap years anymore.

Who cares! Sounds like a good feature! It would be easy to have a random button, but sounds like you want it to randomize within a specific chord like a dominant chord. Hmmmm. I will have to think about that one. Sounds like work.

This thread has been morbidly fascinating. Enough so that I'm compelled to put in a half a cent. An analogy. If a person had a doctorate in linguistics, would they gain in knowledge by further studying all the possible theoretical uses of the letter z? Possibly yes, even though they can already figure it out in their head. The mileage will vary from person to person, but the thing that brings anyone to study it in the first place is passion. That's the point. Passion and thirst for knowledge. Why you seem to want to downplay that is beyond me. You've definitely got passion though, I'll give you that. Why you seem to want to use it to keep digging a bigger hole for yourself seems kinda odd, however. :eyebrow:

I don't get it.

How does making a tool that is for....exploration and study....."downplay" someones thirst for knowledge and exploration...when that is what the tool is for?

Huh. I think you are misreading the thread. Or you didn't quite make your point the way you thought you did.
