The best bass for Indie Rock?

Besides the usual P-bass and Jazz bass what would be a good bass for Indie rock? Sonic Youth, The Smiths, Pavement etc. I'm looking forward to see some interesting sugestions.

(For future referance I LOVE Fender but I wanna see some new suggestions besides them.)

Just so you know chances are high you will get flamed for your post. My opinion is any bass can play that kind of music. If you like fender than go fender. Lots of rock bassists use them.

If you want new suggestions go to any music store and check out the wares. MTD, Lakland, Peavey, Yamaha, LTD, Schecter, Spector, Carvin etc. etc. If you got the funds support some of the custom builders like Tom Clement or Dave Atkinson. (Lots of other builders as well).

I've gotten flamed and trolled for every Indie Rock thread I post. I really couldn't care less. This post is just to see peoples opinions. Some people think only a Rick can be good for Indie or just a Stingray. Some say Ibanez and some say Danelectro (My trusted brand). I know the basses I like for the genre. I just want to see the basses other people like for the genre.

You really can use any bass for this style of music, but older/traditional type basses seem to be the most often used.

If you want something besides Fender you can try Rickenbacker, Gibson, Guild, Musicman, G+L, Hofner, etc.

Lakland, Lull, Sadowsky, Regenerate, Hamer, Schecter all have their own spin on vintage-vibed basses too.

What's your budget?

If you can afford them, I'd recommend a Gibson Thunderbird or Rickenbacker 4003.

I have my basses as I stated prior. This thread is more for other peoples opinions on what bass is best for Indie.
