The best bass you've played?

By far my Translucent gold MM stingray!

Difficult to choose between two - either my ACG or a Dingwall ABZ that I tried in store. That was, for me, the best of many basses I tried, including higher-spec Dingwalls. But I didn't have my ACG at the time and my memory of the Dingwall is fading so I can't say for sure which of the two is best.

Best I've ever owned/played was the '66 Jazz I let go to help pay medical bills. I'm still a little bitter about that. It was so warm, so light, and played effortlessly.

These days the best is my Pedulla Pentabuzz. What an amazing instrument.

Toss up between 2 out of about a thousand or so, a Surine 4 string which was the best playing ever and sounded great. Absolute effortless playability on that thing. That and the euro dougie Spector in my sig. It's the Most beautiful looking bass to me, the Doug wimbish neck just disappears in my hand, it's my idea of the perfect neck. Plays great, and is the meanest sounding SOB I've ever had :)

A bass player who played at the theatre where I volunteer let me play his Renaissance 5 string. To put it mildly, I could tell a difference between it and my Squier VM Jaguar SS and Ibanez AEB5. I expected this, but the shocker was that I was able to find the notes despite the cost-cutting move by the manufacturer, I. e., the lack of frets. I wouldn't buy one, but since I like short scale, if I came into lotsa bucks, I'd consider a Rob Allen Mouse.

With apologies in advance to those who may have already seen it - It has been posted here a few times.....

There are many I adore, the best would have to be the bass that Paul Reed Smith made in 1976-77 in his tiny shop on West Street in Annapolis.

When looked at from above, you can see that the body is shaped like a wedge which places the neck angle back a few degrees and makes the playability like no other. Hard to describe but nothing I have ever played is quite as comfortable. Too valuable to ever leave the house - but I still use it in the studio.

Carles Benavent custom model. After a gig he did at a jazz bar.Not only was he kind enough to sign me one of his cds I bought and the entrance tiquet, but he also let me try out his custom made bass. Amazing piccolo bass, I think it is meant to be payed with a pick and with his unique style.

Tone wise, I don't know, I tried it unplugged (although it sounded pretty good while Carles was gigging), but it's definitely the thinnest neck I've ever tried and the strings were extremely close to the fretboard. A blast to play chords with.
