The colonoscopy thread!

1) you drink something (either some kind of soda with a few glasses of water every so often or something else where you drink a gallon of it; 8 oz every 10 minutes)

A colorectal specialist that my wife works with said that he has stopped using the soda because new research has shown that it can seriously mess with your electrolytes. In addition to those two there is also now a series of pills you can do. I wish I'd had the pills!!

I had one done 5 years ago, 1 polyp removed...I was 30. I need to go again soon, from what I am told... yes, the prep sucks, but it's for the best.

I was sedated too, and the only pain I experienced was when they were pushing my side to get the scope to make the first bend, it was unpleasant, but not *painful*.

I remember watching the procedure on *my* monitor...I just remember, in my groggy state, saying to the doctor doing the procedure: "Hey, this looks like the beginning to the old Doctor Who show"....we had a laugh...oh......

Yes, make sure you have a ride home...they won't do the procedure otherwise. Best of luck with that.

I had read the same thing when I was undergoing the exam. I wanted to do the soda since it involved less drinking volume-wise but my doctor said I needed to do the gallon of laxative, which after taking it wasn't so bad. Like you, I sure wish the pills were an option then too, but guess they weren't out yet.

I had one once, it didn't really hurt but it felt weird and unpleasant and the stuff I had to drink so my bowels would be empty and squeaky clean tasted horrible. I must've drank gallons of that stuff!
I was listening to the Peppers' "Mother's Milk" at the time. I can't stand the album any more now. :p

kibuddy,

Why the heck didn't you get sedated?!

At the time, I didn't want to go through the process of going under, then having to wake up afterward. I thought I would be able to take whatever it felt like and just be done with it in about 20 minutes.

Yeah, now I wish I had gotten sedated. It hurt. :scowl:

Gastroscopy.

They make endoscopes, flexible and rigid, for any opening you can think of and for other applications where an incision is made. There are industrial scopes too, for inspecting all kinds of stuff.

Yup. All kinds of scopes. Urethroscopes. Endoscopes. Arthroscopes. Coleodocoscopes (I'm sure I spelled that wrong) nasal-pharyngial scopes, laproscopes...( I used to QC and repair them)... and boy did I sudder at the thought of their applications. What's worse with small incision scopes is the trocars and sleeves that are used with them...that stuff is creepy. Oh, and the pumps that expand yer belly or bladder... ugh. Hope I don't ever need that.
