The colonoscopy thread!

My dad had one done about a month ago. He said that the procedure itself wasn't bad (mostly because of the sedative), but the prep was a killer. When they say a thorough cleansing of the bowel, they aren't kidding.

That part doesn't scare me. It's the concept of being . . . violated. What's the street name for the date rape drug? I could self medicate.

Those fellers don't look so bad.

My dad died of colon cancer...he made me promise him I would get checked. So I've had a colonoscopy at 40 & a 2nd at 46.

It's a piece of cake, I know I was out & didn't recall a thing...Hell, I didn't even remember talking to the doc after the procedure. Glad I had a ride home.

The 1st time-
The last thing I do recall was hearing the doctor say "Roll over" & then a whining noise (out of me &, I assume, the machine).

The 2nd time-
I was laying there...the hottie nurse had to relocate one of the little sensors on my lower side. All I can say is "It moved"!
:D

...and Fleet will clean you out but(t) good.

I had a colonoscopy just last year. I didn't get sedated, though, and it hurt like a *****. If you're getting a sedative, it should be a piece of cake, though.

The day before sucks. As has been stated before, they want you to *completely* clean out your bowels. Not fun.

The next week for me was pretty rough, as well. I got an air bubble caught waaaay up near the top of the small intestine, and it took almost a week for it to work its way out. That was the worst pain I've been in my entire life...

That being said- have fun! :)

Prep is the worst. The stuff you have to drink is terrible and your ass gets all raw and fiery. There IS an all pill prep now though and I would ask the doc if you can get that instead of the liquid.

The colonoscopy itself isn't bad. Although I woke up during mine and it hurt then while I was aware. I think that's unusual...I seem to have a high tolerance to those kinds of drugs.

kibuddy,

Why the heck didn't you get sedated?!

bc

I had the procedure done in the spring, nothing to it. The prep was a bit unpleasant, it literally chaps your ass. They sedated me and I woke up 40 minutes after I went in. They removed two polyps. I have to go in again in 2 years.

Funny, I worked for Olympus medical division for 7 years, process engineering for endoscope assembly. I'm glad I tried to do a good job.

Oh and good luck with it, hope all is OK.

Several times, I am 45

1: I wish I could tell you, "you wont feel a thing", HAH...I did, everytime, and I was sedated, it felt like my bowels were trying to bust, do to the air preasure that gets pump into your colin while they are pushing that hose up your but, its about half a football field long.

2: the cleaning phase, just make sure you are near and stay near a toilet after you start it, and for the next 5-6 hours, if you take a chance and go out in public, you are gonna wind up on the six-o-clock news, it wont be pretty:eek:

3:these procedures are a must however as you approach your 40-50's, DON'T NEGLECT THEM.

4: A EXPERINCED doctor will make all the diff in the world, hope its not his/her first time, it takes a gentle touch. This is the closet you could ever come to getting violated. It will all be ok int the end, ASK QUESTIONS, ASK QUESTION, ASK QUESTION, and yes I got a picture of my colon, and you will get to watch the whole procedure on a little camera mounted on the end of the scope as it travels through you colin, I would not be so quick to put the picture up on my desk at work however:eyebrow:

let us know dude!

The procedure is a piece of cake. Had one a few years ago. Worst part is the prep.

1) you drink something (either some kind of soda with a few glasses of water every so often or something else where you drink a gallon of it; 8 oz every 10 minutes) to cleanse your intestine. I had the gallon to drink (you can have it flavored....I think the consensus was pineapple was the most palatable). This happens over a period of about 3-4 hours the night before. By the time I started drinking a few glasses of it the flow started (you need a toilet handy). I didn't get sick of it or bloated since it starts coming out before you're finished with all of it and hey, I was hungry so the taste wasn't so bad.

You can't have any food except for jello or broth. Don't drink anything red or purple otherwise it could get confused with blood.

After a few hours, the flow stops. Worst part of it was my outlet got pretty raw (keep some wet wipes around). Then you're hungry for the rest of the night (except for some green or yellow jello or some light colored broth).

2) Next day, you get to the hospital and get an IV. They wheel you in and then you're feeling pretty good from the sedative. I was awake the whole time; I felt the boroscope (endoscope?) going around my intestine and saw the pictures of my insides on the monitor screen, but it was pretty comfortable. They said "all done" (about 15-20 minutes) and wheeled me out. (what, finished already?) My wife picked me up. Went home a got some food down. Good news was they said I was good for another 10 years.

It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be; the anticipation is your worst enemy.
