Yep the reason these days I take 2 basses to gigs is because of my 30 year gigging bass the Peavey 5 string Dyna Bass developed a crackle one night and I had to find a position for the cable plug to stop the darn input crackling. After so many years of plugging and unplugging cables the jack contacts had become "tired" and there was no easy fix on the night. I removed the plastic rear cover to access the jack and found out it was a sealed type jack so there really wasnt much I could do. Within the next week I had ordered a new jack of the same type from Peavey thinking it probably would last another 30 years before failure loll..works fine again now but since that very annoying gig I started taking a backup bass. It was a good piece-of-mind decision.
EDIT. ps...I actually found a very slight difference in size of cables with their plugs because of metric and imperial sizing..there is a very very slight size difference between a 1/4" and 6.5mm plug tips..just enough to make a sloppy contact compared to a firm contact.
Try it out...you will find one will fit tighter than the other...i just cant remember if its the metric 6.5mm or 1/8" thats tighter fit loll
