RE: Berry Oakley's bass... that was the 'Tractor Bass' as he and the family called it... I can't guarantee what Darkstar is now was available back then... it was a Gibson humbucker IIRC.

Back on topic with the Flea stuff. You guys just don't get it, or him. Read some biographical stuff, learn a little more where the guy is coming from before shooting your opinions off about him. I think his head is in a much more sound and grounded place that 90% of the R&R musicians in the public eye. He never claimed to be a great player either, the rest of the world dubbed him that, and then people go giving him a hard time about it. Even with that hard time, he still smokes most of the guys out there in his genre of music. He's got more feel, more versatility, more chops, more creativity, more showmanship, and more balls that anyone I can think of at the moment.


All that being said, I think this guy is one cool lookin mo-fo, although I hear he doesn't dress that way anymore.

What does getting it have to do with anything? I dislike his lines, style, tone, and damn near all the music his band has made. I recognize his talent, but nothing else.

Maybe I just don't get it. :confused:


Pinky looks like he just got back from a leather bar full of drag queens. Who is that?

I hear ya joe, he does have a stage presence that really is all his own. Plus he has the balls to be Flea, no doubt there. He is a good supportive bassist musically as well.

I guess I used to really dig his style and that vibe....

eh... anyways. cool plug, joe. That pic belongs in this thread, nice work!

The "don't get it part" has to do with his philosophy behind music, the world, art, etc. He's coming from a place of love, spirit and thoughtfulness - and many people make quick judgements and simply say "drugs!". Flea was never all that much into drugs by the way. The other guys all were.

I heard he was pretty big on acid, but that's it. He didn't get too into the heroine mess that the others got into

I actually lost a lot of respect for him when he was talking about the depth of the song give it away, and he took such offense to the lyrics being parodied. But all and all, he's a good player... but I think a majority of his old stuff is pretty awful. He's "flashy slap" days, where just him playing octaves fast, very bland for the most part. I do appreciate his lines now that he's slowed down. The rest of the band bogs him down, I think, since he isn't burnt out from heroine, he seems to have to carry that band more than ever.

I know John is off Heroine now, but it's left his body/mind/playing in ruins. But I still cannot deny the One Hot Minute album. It's amazing... in trying to match Dave Navarro's over the top style, Flea came up with some of his most creative lines. And their melodic interaction is amazing.

I still don't consider him "cool" at all... but then again, I think he's "cooler" than Geddy Lee. :D
