The coolest synth bass lines ever!

I'm not crazy. nshuman clearly had heard what I had heard before, even if it was incorrect:
https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=seinfeld les claypool
Scroll through that, you will see several places where that claim is made. I think I came to think that when I was looking up tabs on how to play the famous opening line.

Having been misled by Ye Olde Internet on that one, it always sounded like a believable regular slap bass line to me. But, then someone posted the clip of it being played on a keyboard and...well, obviously that works too. Soooooooooo I leave you with this:

Yeah, it is definitely an Internet urban legend I have encountered before. The first time I read it I nearly fell off my chair, so I understand why it is getting this kind of reaction on here.

It's funny to me because it always sounded super synthy to me. I cannot for the life of me understand how that rumor ever started, unless people mistake Seinfeld for South Park?

Aah...thats possible. Les did do tye South Park theme.

As for Seinfeld, sure it sounds like a slap bass at first glance but the tone is waaaay too perfect for it to be real and some of the runs still have that tell-tale, damning sustain on each of the notes. It never sounded like a bass player to me and I always assumed it was from the Roland DR606 drum machine.

I'd never heard the Claypool rumor till this thread, but I'm with you. The line just sounds so synthetic.

But back to The Coolest Synth Bass Lines ever, I can't believe I forgot this classic which I like as much as, if not more than, Peanut Butter.

Funkin' for Jamaica, by Tom Browne... that must be the best synth bass line...
It is! That is an indisputable fact ;). What makes it so great, IMO, is that it has moments of busyness followed by long moments of space, and it's played very expressively. It lends itself to repeated playing without getting dull (for me, at least) since there's so much room to tweak the line.
