Yeah, it's going to be the cab that I will be using when there's no PA, so coloration isn't a problem then :) IMO a cab that you use without PA support should be reliable and shouldn't have many bells 'n whistles, so no tweeter or crossover components that can get burned or solder joints that can come loose.

Btw. you can also get these drivers in the UK.

Arjank we are going to try out an Oberon or two in the near future.:-)

My brilliant son Henry is working on compact (well as compact as possible) transmission line sub units at the mo.
He is carding out long wool fibres to go round all the turns in the batting.:-)

The Aria Pro II SB 700 has arrived, man, this bass sounds Punchy with a capital P!!!
When I plug it into my Amp (Bugera BVP5500) and my 210 (with coaxial mid/high driver) and no EQ the sound is exactly like John Taylors tone on "Anyone out there" and "Sound of Thunder".
I guess they went straight into the board when recording this album.

The strong low/mids of this bass will probably work well with the Cyclops, next week I hope to finish the plans for building the cab.

Looks cool, but must weigh a ton with all of that MDF.

As custom builders we can offer a range of alternative lightweight composite materials and Neodinium magnet loudspeaker options, especially suitable for the elderly and special needs customers, those who find themselves in their twilight years, bereft of able bodied friends and retained road crew.:)X
Luckily the concrete recording studio floor this sub bass cabinet is designed to stand on is reinforced with quite a lot of steel and there is little evidence of sink holes locally or other causes of subsidence. Also I can't foresee it being moved very often if ever.:)

For those in the US who would like to build this cab and can't get a hold on the Oberton 15MB500 then the Eminence 3015 (non-LF) and the Faital 15PR400 are good alternatives and are both popular drivers among bassplayers.

Some more alternatives that will "fit" in this enclosure:
-Fane Axiom AX15-300B
-Peavey 1505-8BW
-PRV audio 15W1600 (response up to 1.5khz)
-JBL 2226J (identical response in the lows)
-RCF MB15H401
-B&C 15CL76

Arjank, can you tell us what sort of TS parameters make a driver (un)suitable for this kind hybrid ported/horn-loaded design?

As fas as TSP's go, Fs, Qes, Vas should be approx the same as the 15MB500 to "work" in this exact design. I've simulated all the drivers I mentioned to see if the response is ok. If the deviation in the response was more then 1dB compared to the 15MB500 I skipped that driver.

Most (but not all) drivers that are suited for bassreflex will work in such a "hybrid". The 15MB500 is one of those drivers that work extremely well in such an enclosure, no unwanted peaks. The main difference between a normal bassreflex and the horn-reflex is that the latter is tuned a bit higher, for our purpose (bassguitar) this works very well. It's not a system you would want to use as a home-cinema sub.
