The definitive black p-bass pickguard thread.

I've seen a bunch of these threads, but I hope this one will help anyone else who was in my place. Here is a side by side of six different pickguards on a rosewood neck black precision. It's a highway one, so it is the flat black paint job.

In order:

BWB, Rosewood, Mint Green, Black Anodized Metal (I believe), Tort, WBW

Vote for your favorite or post pictures of any pickguards on a black bass that I may not have been able to include.

I like abalone or just plain white
I usually hate the garden variety white Fender pickguard but for some reason
a black P Bass with maple neck screams for the white:

Tort. If thats too plain for you, make the pickup cover blonde/aged white. I saw a strat with that combo, it looked awesome.

I bet that would look amazing. I like the sounds of that.

I have a black Precision/maple now with a Black/White/Black scratchguard, and I plan on getting a solid-ply black guard with black screws once I get a non-dotted Status Graphite Precision replacement neck. The whole bass will be black besides the chrome hardware and I think it's going to look stunning.

You might want to consider a solid, glossy black scratchguard (not the metalic that you've listed). Just another possibility to think about.

i just put a mint green pickguard on my black p with rosewood last week. i thought tort looks really good but so does mint and i'll be way less likely to meet someone with the same bass except for you possibly.

Black and rosewood is uncool. Just like black pants and brown shoes, or vice versa. If its rosewood, make the body natural or something. If the body is black, ebony or maple is mandatory IMO. So this poll is moot lol.

I went with rosewood because it's diffrent, but if I more then one vote I would have went with Mint Green too...

Here's a gold on black as mine was originally, and the black/red/black on black as it is now.

IMO Black with rosewood: tort
Black with maple: black, or whatever.

If you're going for the pure stealth look then black metal is the way to go, but personally I like the look black/white/black guard as it breaks up the mass of black.

Now (I'll duck first) but what's all the love for tort guards out there? I've just taken one of my new Jazz: personally I hate tort guards! They look rather too gaudy and a bit like a slab of bolognese sauce to me, but each to their own I suppose. Happy to be in the minority on that one but for me it's definitely a case of the the emperor having not clothes!

Seeing them all together invoked different reactions to the combinations.

For a black body, to me:

BWB says "70s"

Rosewood says "Hippie"

Mint says "sophisticated classic"

Solid black says "toughguy" especially with the BAII

Tort says "'60s classic"

WBW says "blah"

I'm not a fan of the BAII look so that didn't help. I mostly ignored it but it generally looks "pimpin'" to me.

My HWY1 P is Daphne Blue with the original style bridge and I put a mint guard on it.

IMO....

If it has a rosewood neck than the only guards that work with a black finish are tort and mint with my preference being tort.

If it has a maple neck than it needs to be b/w/b or mint with my preference being b/w/b.
