the drunk guy shows up

So I'm bass player, my bro is the drummer/visionary of our new band Phantom Green. We play stoner doom metal. Every guitarist that shows up pulls out the booze during try outs. We get some good guys but I think the wAsted new guy is questionable. Anyone else experience this? And the "hey man I'm sorry I can't make practice " excuses get old. Us 2 are serious but wanna have fun, without everyone being wasted. Sorry maybe I'm just venting.

I understand, part of it might be age range. When I was in my 20's it was beleive you couldnt be in a band I dont care the genre if you didnt get wasted. I found 2 great old buddy's to form a band with. And we pretty much have it out of our system. Are we 100% sober all the time.....NO!?!? But, the vocalist/guitarist has had a drink in almost 3 years and he got arrested and went to prison on P.I. charges, told me he had 18 in one year, over 30 total. Good thing he didnt have a license!!!! Our drummer, him and I use to drink Jagermeister by the gallon. Even just as a few years ago every weekend was a see who passes out first and get wrote on party.

But now, its about the music. The party is behind us and we are very serious in our band but still enjoy having fun. When you post a ad for auditions let it be known that heavy drinking isnt favorable.

Also we was a 4 peice band, but after several no call no shows we went power trio.

+1. About what I would have said too. If you want different players try a different genre of music. The guitarists you find for what you're doing aren't gonna be alter boys.

While there's definitely some truth to this, I kind of agree that a certain amount of maturity/responsibility/professionalism is also required. You have to remain sober enough to play, and also to avoid getting arrested (if you're driving).

I only play in bands that play sober, at practice and at gigs. I used to be in a band that started drinking, just a few beers at first, then eventually at least 2 bottles of vodka every practice. Things went downhill quickly, and practices turned into social events, with a few songs getting played every now and then for fun. I've seen plenty of trainwrecks caused by drinking before a gig aswell. It disgusts me when people mix music and alcohol.

After a gig though, I get crazy :D

The only time it's acceptable to drink at an audition is if it's offered.
and even then, i think it would have to be in a context of, "it's night, we're having a beer, you want one?"

if they're doing shots or pounding beer after beer at an audition, i'd say they're the ones who've failed the audition, not you.

It's called "freedom of association", which I believe you may have enshrined in your constitution? You can play with whoever you like. UnStoner Doom Metal may take a little bit of getting off the ground but all power to you. I'm sure there's a sober guitar hero out there writing a thread on Guitards Anonymous right now complaining he can't find any serious stoner doom musicians.
