The Effect Builders Club!

Im going out on a limb here, but if I were to post a high res picture of the insides of my Steve Vai Bad Horsie 2 wah, would any of you effects building/modifying gurus be able to instruct me to where the exact capacitor(s) to swap are? Of course this will be in order to add more bass response.

Depends. Do you have schematics to what caps to change? This might be a little difficult, but if you have the schematics, I can atleast try and see.

I would say yes, but be sure to post pics of both sides of the circuit board. It would be more convenient if you reversed one of the pics so we can line everything up easier. But I guess I could do that myself anyways...

edit, whoops, I missed a few posts

No prob:)

Ok, so that schematic looks like its just for the standard wah. Do you have a list of caps to change?

Sadly I'm new to effects building and was hoping that someone could point out to me which capacitors to change. I want to make the wah bass friendly and I know this usually involves changing some capacitors to .22uf or .1uf. I really hope you can help, because judging by the rest of this thread you seem to have a lot of experience.

I would say change out the C5 cap to a .22 or .1 (to my ears, a .1 cap cuts no bass) like you said. it is the first cap in the signal path, making that one higher will give more bass freq. to the effect, but there are no guarantees from me that the rest of the circuit doesn't cut some frequencies elsewhere.

with this being a wah, and it basically changes the center freq. of a band-pass filter, I would think that this mod might not help too much. Mainly this is because when you are actually using the wah, bass frequencies will still be cut very often. if you want to hear some more bass frequencies with the wah, I would suggest trying it out in the loop of a blender. I do this wil my 105Q and I like the sound.

Yeah, I tend to agree. I really wouldn't attempt this unless someone has a real bass mod because, honestly, I don't know how to make a wah bass friendly, other than the blender idea.

Best of luck!

Ive built several pedals: Escobedo cmos boost+ TL071 clean boost
Redllama clone, "art" loop box. and pedalboard router (don't use it anymore since I have my korg tuner)

I've modded a dod vibrothang to control speed (put it in a crybaby housing)

Building pedals is cool

Anyone who has built the Bazz Fuss (http://www.home-wrecker.com/bazz.html)

what size perfboard would I need to build this?

Have not built it, but can see its not very much. I would get a larger perf board than needed then choose a corner to build it on. When you done, cut it down, that way you have more for your next project(trust me there will be a next project :D) or room for error.

Okay cool, thanks for the tip. Im actually going back and forth right now between making the Bazz Fuss or the Tonepad Red Llama my first DIY pedal..... any opinions one way or the other?

(I have a decent amount of experience with soldering and irons and such from switching out the guts on a couple Titan guitars and one of my SX's, as well as my other hobby, fencing. So I am not too worried about either of these pedals being over my head).

Do both of em :D:p

I'd say the red llama because Its a crossover betweend overdrive and Fuzz so It's more useable thant a bazz fuss

Thats what I was thinking, as soon as I finish my summer classes (took a few classes that I was unable to take last fall due to my university's enigneering department class scheduling magic) I am going to sell the books from the classes and buy the parts to build the Red Llama
