The Epiphone Thunderbird Club

I played one for the 1st time a few weeks ago and was impressed. I wanted something different than my Fender basses but didnt want to spend alot for something I wasnt sure of. I stopped in my local GC a week later & there was a slightly used vintage sunburst that still had the covers on the plastic parts, but some buckle rash on the back. $199. I grabbed it up. Love the sound but gotta do something about that neck dive.

that doesn't cost $90+

I officially love my new thunderbird, the neckdive isn't even that bad.

but since we tend to drive a lot to get to shows i kinda want a case, preferbly hardshell. any suggestions?

I know cases are made specifically for Thunderbirds but I would imagine you'd be hard pressed to find one for less than $90. I have hard cases for my Thunderbird and my Blackbird and they ran me at $100 each. The bass fits snug inside and they're well worth every cent I paid for them.

for a lot of people 300.00 is a lot of "play" money they don't have. Have the dealers drop the price 100.00 on purpose to clear the old ones out in anticipation of their deliveries of the pro's, and now all those old SB's @ 200.00 are now attracting the people that were just on the yes-or-no question in their minds.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see more people than ever coming into here and saying "check out my new SB"

an interesting thought though -- if they can now sell them at 200, what does that tell you of their REAL VALUE???? :D

Count me in - new vintage sunburst!

I know, no pics, no bass -- but I'm loading for 2 gigs today and don't have time.

I picked mine up a few days ago, and here's the mods so far:

Neck-dive fix, straplocks
Metal truss rod cover 0ff e-bay - pretty cool.
Nordstrand Big Splits pickups, wired passive to stock harness -requires minor widening of routs (1-2 mm per side)
Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Flats (killer strings).

This thing sounds huge and solid. You know sometimes you put parts together, step back, and go, Holy S#$#!!! ? Well, this is it. I can't recommend the Big Splits enough.

Now, I wasn't really going for the Gibson sound, but the alder/maple lends itself well to the fender-ish sound I was after. I'll let you all know how the gig goes tonight (gotta sit in on guitar first this afternoon). But I may have a new favorite bass in the herd!

Just curious... but why deal with the T Bird's various drawbacks if you want a Fender sound anyways? The best part about Thunderbirds is their sound. I was going to say that the second best part is their sex appeal. But that goes hand in hand with the sound <--- NOT KIDDING!

*sigh*

I shove mine into a Fender gig bag that BARELY fits it.

I have a gigbag that my Peavey Fury I (the T-20 type w/angled pup, not the P-bass copy) barely fits in, but the Epi won't. Fortunately I had a box-style bass case I bought awhile back in a store going-out-of-business sale new for $50, even though at that point I didn't have any basses for it. I'd been using the box bass case for my Gretsch Special Jet guitar (required a rolled-up t-shirt to keep the guitar from shifting), so the guitar came out and the T-bird went in. Fortunately earlier last week I found a beater Fender/Ric style box case (the kind with the padded ends) on craigslist for $20, in which the Gretsch guitar fit perfectly, so I'm all set.

That's a pretty sweet deal. I wish I could find something like that around here but since I don't live in a big area its rare to find Thunderbird and cases for them. Hence why I've bought all my stuff new.

i think i was very lucky to have found it.something tells me that if they didn't have it there, then i probably wouldn't have found one anywhere else around where i live, and i probably would have had to order one.

same here.they are taking forever to ship them out...i thought people would have had them by now and have pics posted

I've been search the net hard. Because if my Alpine white Bird is so good these ones should be off the hook.

Most of the EU online stores at least have them listed for order but not in stock. Not one American stores even has a hint of something coming, I read on the TB Sam Ash took an order and expect them in June. I have to burst their bubble but that's like in a couple weeks and not a peep.

IMO Epi is gonna ship to the EU first to capitalize on their currency exchange.

Time to present some new members. I am sure they are anxious to join.

Well there ya go. Everyone is present and accounted for.

I'm in!
richard.jpg

Old picture. I look way young, but the bass is what matters. Its name is richard. I took off the plastic because i liked the wood color so much. I put straplocks on it, but that doesn't keep it from constantly falling. But, it usually does more damage to whatever it hits. One time, this guy was getting way too aggressive at a show. I jumped into the pit and he came at me. I didn't actually notice him, but richard knocked him in the head mid-song. Needless to say, the guy mellowed out. I tend to counteract the normally subdued T-bird tone by using a ton of loud fuzz pedals. All in all, he's my favorite.
