The Fender Bassman 100T thread

Hi Everyone

I have been watching this thread from day one and I am about to pull the trigger on one of these. Had one more question. Can you hear any difference between the 6L6 tubes and the 6550 tubes tone and noise wyse?

I am really having a had hard time deciding on which one to get. I really don't need the power of the SB300, but.........
I am planning on using 2 of the Matching Neo 115 cabinets.
So if I went with the 100t that would only be 50 watts per cabinet and with the SB300 would be 150 per cabinet.

I play in a band that uses IEM most of the time, but there are time in other places that the IEM's are not available. I play country type music and have 3 basses to choose from. Fender Customs 5, Cirrus 6 USA, Modulus Q6 with Barts.

Do not use any pedals or effects.....Like it Clean, Clear, Fat and Full.

Any feed back would be helpful. However I want both heads.

I cant believe how light the 610 is!!!! the goliathIII is an anchor compared to it!! didnt play it cuz the wife, i guess changed her mind as soon as fed ex dropped it off. She was cool with it now shes being.....lets just say very mean right now!! i might start a thread to vent. Hey jerryd.....i have not a/b sb300 &100t but im sure someone has. i thinker fenderlove owns both.

I use 2 15's with my 100T. TL-606's with 3015's. I can keep up in band practice at 25 watt and at 100 watts I have never run out steam at 100 watt. I am glad I didn't get the 300. The 100 lets you get that great power tube OD without melting the first 3 rows faces off.

Yea, they trick you into thinking its cool and then all of a sudden it' not and the other foot drops. :bawl:

according to fender you should almost never get the fan to come on except for extreme conditions... I found this out when I took mine in for a warranty repair when I thought my fan or heat sensor was faulty. mine got so hot at practice once I burned my hand unplugging the speaker cable. I was sure something was faulty...took it in and everything tested fine.. the tech called fender to inquire and got a spec sheet from their service guys stating it.

really made me wonder what they considered "extreme".

I have ab'ed the 100T with the SB300, although only inside a shop. Tonally, as you would expect, they are very similar. The difference, and it was a few months ago now, was that the 100T will break up with power tube grind much much earlier than the SB300. I remember at the time the difference in headroom was very obvious. This will suit many people, although both heads of course do have the overdrive blend channel option. Me, I like it clean and I have occasionally come close the limits of clean headroom with the 100T. It didn't bother me much and the grind was pleasant.
I will be receiving a Super bassman 300 to trial for a night in a few weeks and I will be able to comment more accurately then on the perceived differences. I have a feeling I will be keeping it for those gigs where a little bit extra might not be needed but is nice to have in hand. If I keep it I suppose the Orange AD300 will have to go...

I would not worry too much about the 100t pushing two 115 cabs. I have the SB300 and if I were in your shoes, I would still go for the SB 300 just to get the extra headroom, since you want to use two cabs.

Because as you're saying you like it clean and clear, my personal thought is, then why go with a monstrously heavy tube amp? I personally went with the 100T because I tired of the clean and clear sound I was getting from my GK rig - I wanted the grind of power tubes just on the edge of distortion, not buzzy preamp overdrive. And to get the beautiful sound from the Super Bassman that I'm now getting from the 100T, as HD Racer pointed out, any faces within 50 yards would be melting. Again from my perspective, bass players have been clamoring for lower powered tube bass amps for that very reason - 300 watt tube amps are just too clean unless you're on a big stage, and despite my fantasies, in my reality I'm on a small stage 90%+ of the time. And even when I'm on a big stage, I have FOH support.

Yes yes yes, I understand that. But I'm talking practically, at least in my case, for decades I've been able to get everything I wanted in terms of 'clean and clear' from relatively easy to schlep solid state amps, but never got the edgy grind I wanted until I went (lower powered) tube.

yes there is more to tube amps than dirt. I can remember my 1st blackface basmman back in the 60's....Nice head but not enough power for today, but was enough back then with the groups I played with. However it developed a problem and no one could fix it. So I trade it for a Sunn. I am not into tube breakup or distortion. I tried and owned Peavey all kinds of models and this brand has been the most reliable of any amp I have used. GK RB1001, Eden 800c and Navigator. I like the navigator but had problems and Eden could not fix it, and after 4 tries they replaced it. Then I sold it and have tried some new ones but they have to much hiss. Mesa M6 & M9- to much noise(Hiss) on the amp and DI (I believe this is due to the high gain on the pre-amp stage), Genz Benz GBE1200 good amp but did not like the 3 u space.

So looking to go back to my roots. Anyway there is not a better looking rig anywhere IMHO.....
