I've found that it's a simple thing to reply to someone's request with, "sorry we don't play that one".
And there are certainly a lot of songs that have been burned out by either bands or radio. It's surprising
how some of them still maintain popularity when a local band is playing live music though.

Right? I don't remember hearing it much at all growing up. Then suddenly in the early 90s it was everywhere. I think The Commitments movie and beer commercials probably had something to do with it.

I turned down Freebird once.
Really the only choice though since we were a 3 piece acoustic instrumental Klesmer/Folk group. I think the drunken requester/heckler just wanted attention though . After the third time I told him to *&$# himself (never done that before or since) and he laughed, raised his drink and was quiet the rest of the night.

Never been in a strict covers band, but I have no problem playing crap that folks want to hear. In my last country band (50/50 covers and originals) that usually played sligtly less common covers we always had a few of those overplayed crowd-favorites in the set. For a classic country bass player Bobby McGee is actually a nice chance to cut lose after playing Root 4 all night.

And you waited til the third time? Admirable restraint! IME the standard response is "here's your free bird, pal!" and then you give him the "we're number one" salute, with the wrong finger.

The first was ignored. The second was "Sir, do you know what Instrumental Band means?".

Now that I think of it in my country band and pop rock group we periodically got the Freebird requests, but we just ignored it and I don't recall any repeat requesters. The Klesmer incident just stands out as particularly notable.

Well, not necessarily on the list, but someone offered to buy me a shot if we did "You Shook Me All Night Long" by AC/DC on Saturday. We did it and the guy liked it, but he disappeared before the end of the set...sigh...

Oh great songs to be sure - this was just a case of where I was promised a tip (a shot) and the guy snuck out before the end of the set so he didn't have to pay up.
