The freaking ear buds!!!!!

Im not superior at all. Im as big a jerk as anyone. So are you.

And I am contributing: I'm slowly but surely teaching you what humility is. Which you owe me $5 for, btw.

I had humility before we crossed paths. The fact that you think you need to "teach" me (or anyone for that matter) proves you have none. Clearly, if you feel that you are able to "teach" others you don't know, you have sense of superiority. You feel as though you are somehow more enlightened, and thereby qualified to "teach" others what you know.

All I did was ask questions and make observations. I never degraded anyone.

And, while we're at it, I know I am being trolled. But you are fun.

Yes.

Quote the line that was degrading.

You wrote, you should be able to find it, if you're so real with yourself.

Btw, just because someone calls you on your crap it doesn't mean it's trolling. But it's human nature to react that way. Just like it's human nature to get defensive & fight over something as simple as "your behavior is no better than anyone else's". So you can't really be blamed for any of this. However, you do want the world to be a better place. Well man up then, my judgy friend.

I'm in the mood to keep going down the rabbit hole with you today. So, here goes.

I said that their behavior was confusing to me. I admitted I didn't understand it. I asked what they are listening to (rhetorically, of course).

I never judged them. I simply floated the possibility that perhaps the work environment would be more friendly if we were to speak to one another. That seems neither judgemental nor irrational.

Just because you admit you're a jerk that doesn't mean everyone is a jerk. Not everyone is a jerk. Those who admit they are jerks are not somehow more enlightened or "real with themselves" than anyone else. If you know you are a jerk, but refuse to do anything about it, you are just a jerk.... not an enlightened jerk..... not a special jerk...... not a better jerk.... just a jerk. (Your word, not mine.)

Maybe NOW you realize why everyone ignores everyone else!!

If you were to read back through the silliness, you would understand that (in typical fashion) @Darth Handsome picked a fight about something other than the topic at hand. Usually, I ignore him. But banging my head against the wall seemed like fun this morning.

A little skirmish between strangers on a forum doesn't begin to explain why people who work within close proximity of one another every day refuse to acknowledge each other. I doubt ridiculous debates like ours would ensue daily on the bus or in the hallway sparked by "Good morning" or "How's it going?"

That's what I mean! Look around you. That's what you see most places. Today I just happened to notice that ear buds have been added to the "wall" that divides us. It was almost as if they were saying "Looking down doesn't quite insure that nobody will talk to me. Maybe if I stick something in my ears there's NO WAY anyone would bother." Yes, I am leaping to conclusions. I get it. I have no idea what they are actually thinking.

See? Progress! You're welcome.

I never claimed that I knew what they were thinking. I literally ASKED what was going on.... thereby ORIGINALLY admitting I had no idea what they were thinking. You didn't guide me to that conclusion. I was speculating from the onset. I was BLATANTLY speculating from the onset. I was perplexed and confused from the onset. And that was the WHOLE POINT. Confusion and a lack of understanding.... a lack of context..... was the entire point of even posting to begin with. Someone with a more concise writing style could have simply said "Ear buds. I don't get it." and it would have meant the same thing as what I posted.

Thanks for missing that.

How about we take a different approach @Darth Handsome .

Do you see a problem with almost everyone around here wearing ear buds and staring down at their phones? Do you see it as a healthy development in society? Is it a good thing? Bad thing? Or irrelevant and has zero affect on anything whatsoever?

I think you work at a college of some sort, and I agree that ear buds everywhere is annoying, but I'll admit that when I went to college, I also donned the accursed ear buds. In my case, it was precisely about locking that world out for a bit between classes and when I had free time.
In the real world, I think it's highly inappropriate to wear ear buds, but college isn't the real world, and sometimes you just need some armour against it all.

That actually makes sense for students. There is a college component where I work but it isn't the main focus.

Thanks for the input.
