The freaking ear buds!!!!!

I find my music significantly more interesting than most people. Also, with my social anxiety, listening to music helps.

I do keep the earbuds out when I'm at work because that's just unprofessional.

I had a job doing Data entry for a while. It was actually completely acceptable to keep the ear buds in as we typed. Such a great job but they promoted me to Telesales. No more music but twice the pay.

Do you see a problem with almost everyone around here wearing ear buds and staring down at their phones? Do you see it as a healthy development in society? Is it a good thing? Bad thing? Or irrelevant and has zero affect on anything whatsoever?

How deep do you want to go? Society was never healthy in the first place. We're a virus. We eat each other and destroy everything in our path. I dont blame the individual for his or her flaws, its in our nature to be disgusting beings. That wont change whether we're on our phones or not.

Yeah, That wouldn't be acceptable. Lol, Now I am just a lowly truck driver and Ear Buds are Illegal for me. I do keep the Cab of my truck filled with music at all times though. I just have to keep it at a modest level so I can hear other important things.....

I'm OK with the earbuds, but it's the lack of eye contact that bothers me.. at least, that's what I notice.
I doubt people used to make much more eye contact or talked more in social situations.. My guess is that's a Norman Rockwell memory.. an idealized memory of something that never really existed.

People looking down at their phones while at a meal together... to me that is bad, or can be.

I actually grew up in Norman Rockwell's world, only a decade or so later. When we walked down the sidewalk, we exchanged niceties. Men actually tipped hats at women. People held doors for one another. People started conversations with strangers in the aisles at grocery stores. Cops got kittens out of trees. Older people were seen as wise old treasures. You carried yourself as though the President was in the room around them.

Nice stuff indeed. However, you haven't mentioned epic deforestation, mass animal extinction or holes in the atmosphere, to name a few.
But at least we tipped our hats to the dames (when they were out of the kitchen, that is) & didn't go walking around in sandals & ponytails. Or earbuds for that matter.

Im not "picking a fight" & I mean this in the best possible way, but this seems to be your current state:

I grew up in the 70s, The "gals" had gotten out of the kitchen by then. My mother worked. Most women I knew worked.

I grew up in paper mill country. They plant more than they cut....as do lumber companies here. Third world countries, not so much.

Thousands of species went extinct long before humans came along. But I guess that's our fault too..... somehow.

The climate changed even more drastically long before we came along too. But I guess that's our fault too..... somehow.

So, I guess dinosaurs were the virus until we came along? Then we killed them off somehow and became even more.....viral....and..... stuff.

That must be it.

Seriously, though. What was the virus that caused all of the same problems on the planet before we came along? Ice ages? Forest fires? Animal extinctions? I guess all of those things were "natural occurrences" until humans came along. And then the exact same problems became unnatural.....cuz we're all like mean..... and like..... dumb..... and...... stuff.

Wow. We're worse than animals eating each other into extinction, tectonic plates crushing each other, massive volcanoes, glaciers, meteors and floods that happened over millions of years combined???? We must be pretty...... bad.... and.... stuff. That's some powerful hair spray we had developed.

That explains you. And I can appreciate that.

But, surely, you don't think we are becoming a society where the majority feel that way. If we are, we're in trouble.

I expressed confusion with regard to the habits of people around me. I never even implied that I am "better" than they are. I didn't even "criticize" them. I ASKED QUESTIONS as to what they are listening to that is so important. I did, however, imply that the whole mood around here might be friendlier if they were to pick their collective heads up and speak to each other.

Just how did you manage to add 2+2 and come up with 75? At what point did I put anyone down? I just reread my post. At no point did I imply any lack of intelligence, lack of decency, lack of character or anything even someone like you could misinterpret as degrading.
