Well this one was made in 1987 going by the serial number. It is a real shame Maton don't make basses anymore. I think they stopped making them in the late 80s. They did indicate on the phone they they regularly receive requests for a bass line, but whether they decide to make them again anyone's guess. I for one certainly hope they do.

The bass is a Tom Clement. Its my third and is quite amazing.

Its wired with a hipshot ghost piezo into a bart buffer and an aguilar 3 band preamp. The bass is almost completely chambered and has a real strong unamplified sound--perfectly matched for the piezo (and weighs only 6.5 pounds!).

Its a 34" scale strung E-C and can give you everything from woody "EUB" sound to more electric fretless growl.

I'm not digging the fretlines though.
I'm an unlined guy personally, but I don't care for white lines against the lighter parts of the wood. Black would look classier IMO, but that's just my opinion.

i'd go without fretlines too, but then I couldnt play in tune. Tom Clement and I went back and forth on color for lines...I opted for light maple to make them less visually disruptive.

I like the durability of ebony but I'm more of a maple guy over rosewood on fretted, I was thinkin... Cause I relish the thought of having to ever replace a neck (just cause the old one wore out) 'specially on a fretless cause the next one might not be so great. So when I saw it and read it was ebony I figured it would be good, and with the black lines going through it the bass would be a real eye catcher!


But I guess it wouldn't be good.


Do you know if it would be any better without epoxy (I doubt it would be tho)?
