I have one from the late 80's as well. It was my main strap until recently. I still use it, just not as much anymore. I have a spare of the same type but it needs a lot of time to break in.
My favorite strap right now is a Couch strap. Padded red vinyl with a seat belt for the adjustable end. Very comfortable, especially when I use my 10 lb Nate Mendel Precision. The only down side is that when there is no tension on the strap, the buckle loosens up and the strap gets longer. Other than that, it's a fantastic strap.
Does yours from the 80s have the cable holder loop that snaps to the strap? that is a feature I've always liked. When I'm not wireless, I still use it.
I just had Couch make me a 3" padded strap and they made it 55" long with no adjustment to my specs. Its perfect for me as far as comfort and width and with no buckles etc its 3" the full length so it looks awesome!
Bought one of these when I had a Sadowsky, very comfortable strap I still use, Sadowsky long gone.

I also use a Comfort Strapp for my Lakland Skyline JO, which is nearly 12 lbs. It's great, but almost has a bit too much stretch at time.
Any suggestions for similar padding with less stretch or bounce?

So far it seams very comfy. I have been looking for a wider strap for a little bit but don't like leather straps and am just kind of picky and wasn't digging a bunch of other ones I found online. I like seatbelt straps and the extra width seems to make a big difference in comfort for me. Thinking about another down the road.

Just saw this thread. Straps are obviously a very personal thing. I have a rather large stock of them. But my favorite by a good amount is the Henry Heller 2.5 Amalfi leather, with the perforated Capri leather backing. My all time favorite. Not cheap but really good.
Had a Levy's 4.5" padded leather strap. It made my Warwick virtually weightless, but was too wide. Swapped it on here for a similar 2.5" version, which I very much prefer.

Recently picked up an Original Fuzz strap. It's pretty darn nice (stock photo). Cloth with leather ends.
Also lucked into two Italia straps that have leather top and bottom... top piece is bigger grain like you think of with Italia and under side is smooth as glass. These are two of the nicest straps I've ever had. I prefer them over the suede Italias.
Lastly, I found a 3" wide vintage strap. Looks great with burst body P.

I've seen some Italia's that I could be happy with, like the ones you have. I like the ones that are softer on the bottom side and stiffer on top.
That's the one I have now, took a bit to get used to it, but now can go at least an hour and a half or more, zero shoulder pain. It's wide, but seems to eventually conform to your bend of your shoulder to where you don't notice it anymore. Absolutely love it!
New update for me...things haven't changed much...my Levy's MSS2-4's are still my go-to straps (4 1/2" padded garment leather), but I did get to try a couple new ones.
Levy's 3" Padded Neoprene Strap---belongs to our front guy. Not as stretchy as I thought it would be, which was nice. It's very light, but as always with those neoprene straps with a strap overlaid on top of it going up and down the middle, the middle section starts to dig into my shoulder after a while. That's why I had to rid myself of the Comfort Strapp, too. He likes them with his guitars, though, and they're very well built.
Levy's M26CV---clear vinyl 2 1/2". In a very uncharacteristic move for me, I bought one of the most uncomfortable straps on the market because it was clear and $10. I have loved clear straps ever since seeing Will Lee use an Earth III clear strap on the Letterman show, but his sucked and broke easily and often. But when Devo started using them in 2010, I got interested again but didn't want to pay the ridiculous prices people wanted for them. Last year, Levy's brought them back under the new owners Gator Cases, priced them very reasonably, and after 6 months of semi-regular usage, they show no signs of the vinyl ripping. I can only use it with my lighter basses, and I can't do too many gigs in a row with it, but while it's the last choice for someone looking for a very comfy strap, it's a solid build and has held up extremely well. They could do a little better job smoothing out the edges, but whaddaya want for $10?

My Comfort Strapps are nearing the end of their lives.(stitching is coming out)
I will try out a Neotech regular Mega strap next.
Mainly because the leather portion seems to be shorter than the Comfort Strapps unpadded buckle part.
Which I had to double over with zip ties so that the padded portion is lower on my collarbone.
